annabel m | Do people on houseboats pay council tax? |

I used to live on a narrow boat with a residential mooring supplied by British waterways.we had 72 feet of moorings in the countryside and paid full council tax whilst the boat was moored up,but recieved 1/365 off for every day the boat was off its moorings, this is applicable to any and all like moorings.
If you wish to apply for a residential mooring be warned as they are few and far between, only 22 in all of lincolnshire..
There are three types of licence you can apply for
1 continuos cruising license that means you have to do at least 10 lock miles /week
2 residential mooring license.pay concil tax
3 mooring license, you cannot live abourd your boat.
get the terms and conditions from your local BW office and apply to joi the RBOA residential boat owners assosiation and you will be sent a booklet called "Living afloat"
It is not a cheap way of living you will have mooring fees, council tax, insurance, license fee and dry dock fees every 2 years or so,but gas water elactric will be cheaper than in ahouse,we paid just £1/week for all our electrics..
BW supply refuse, water, and electrical hook ups,but you will not get a rebate for these items supplied. We have seen residential moorings without some of these facilities and they still pay full council tax,it`s all very unfair as there are so many variations around the country |

Yes they do and they pay mooring fees too, each 4 years they have to take the boat out of the water by crane and either pay for some one else to scrap the bottom of the boat, which can amount to over £2,000,or do the diy themselves, which then costs around £290,this covers the cost of the crane lift.In living on a house boat is not cheap,i have friends who live that life, but would never live in a house again, they say that waking up on the water, with the ducks and the quiet surrounds is priceless. |

Not if you keep moving about. Mooring fees are a joke really. You just have to stay ahead of the game as it were, as if you pay fees you will pay tax also.. |
