Do retired people over 70 have to file taxes to get the refund?
if the only income is from SS and maybe a very little interest income
and what status would a widow use to file..with no Dependants?

The requirement to file a tax return depends upon your income, not your age. The filing requirement amout for a 70-year old is higher than for someone under age 65 but it's still income driven, not age driven.

A widow would file as Single unless her spouse died in 2007. In that case she'd file as Married Filing Jointly one last time and write "deceased" after her spouse's name.

If one-half of her SS benefits plus all other income is $25,000 or more filing as Single or $32,000 or more filing Married Filing Jointly then some of the SS beneifts are taxable and a return must be filed.

Anyone with over $3,000 in qualifying income may file a return for 2007 if they wish to receive the stimulus plan rebate, even if they're not normally required to file. Social Security is qualifying income so she should file to get that. Go here for more information on that: http://www.irs.gov/irs/article/0,,id=179182,00.html

Yes, everyone has to file if they wish to get the refund. He should have gotten a packet telling him so directed at people specifically on SS.

You must file a return to get the tax rebate. If you normally would not file a return, then you need to file a 1040A.
Here is the IRS web address

Yes, you have to file in order to get the 'stemulis rebate'. Be sure to write 'stemulis rebate' on the top of your 1040A form or it may take longer to get your rebate.

Chris C
file so u can get that money.

Yes, she'd have to file to get the $300 stimulus payment. She'd file as single, and claim an exemption for herself.

fluke
yes. even if you usually do NOT file, this year you have to.

no...one exception tho, new stimulas refund requires a tax file for last year! widow is another question and would depend on income...

yup! Must file to get the refund. It depends if the person filing was still married last year. Then he has to claim his spouse otherwise file as single.

Ein Edelstein
From what I know, you have to file (even if you normally don't) to GET the stimulus package.

Starting in May, the Treasury will begin sending economic stimulus payments to more than 130 million households. To receive a payment, taxpayers must have a valid Social Security number, $3,000 of income and file a 2007 federal tax return. IRS will take care of the rest. Eligible people will receive up to $600 ($1,200 for married couples), and parents will receive an additional $300 for each eligible child younger than 17. Millions of retirees, disabled veterans and low-wage workers who usually are exempt from filing a tax return must do so this year in order to receive a stimulus payment.
You can try with http://www.taxsimple.org/ where you can file your return for free.
