misslolo1981 | Do single parents get enough help? |
I am a single parent and I currently live off next to nothing... Now before loads of you turn your nose up and start the "living on benefits" bashing let me finish. Too many people are too quick to judge.
Before i had my daughter i worked. I would of liked to go back to work after having her but with having rent to pay, council tax, gas, electricity, other household bills, food and clothes its nearly impossible. I know you can now claim working tax credits which are meant to "top up" your earnings, i went in to see someone about this recently and they worked it out for me. I would of been £12 better off a week! That wouldnt even make a dent in my £400 rent let alone touch the other bills i have.
So, my question is this.... Do you think single parents get a fair ride?
Does anyone else have the same Additional Details Hi, to the lady that asked... My tax credits award was worked out during a 6 month review. Its based on an average salary. Its to try and convince you youl be better off going back to work but like another lady said, i too am in alot of debt as it is and with only an extra £12 a week i cant imagine where i'd be... Probably back at home with my parents as id never afford to live otherwise |

Can't blame you for not going back to work. Why on earth should you? I think the incentives need to be higher, so that people who want more money and are willing to work for it have better options. And those who'd rather exist on very little, but be with their kids, would have that choice. Right now it doesn't seem like there's much in the way of real choice. Working full time for an extra £12 a week is absurd. |

£12 a week, that's £52 a month, I wouldn't mind my employer giving me an extra £52, after tax, for doing absolutely nothing. |

I am totally with you on this. I was married and my ex left me with two children. I have always worked and only claim working family tax credit but I am in debt up to my eyeballs through bringing up to strapping children. I hope when they leave home I am able to get back to solvency. I have often thought that if I won the lottery I would start a charity for single mums who genuinely want a better life. The financial pressure on single mums is enormous. Women do not earn the same as men, simple as that. I am studying to be a legal executive and am finally on £20,000 but it has taken 8 years of struggling to achieve even this. My mortgage has gone from £35,000 to £125,000 just to live. I think government should do more for us. Good luck anyway. |

this is a tough one ... i am a single mother i have 3 sons and i work ... i pay my rent , council tax etc ....
i earn no more than if i was to claim benefits ... i enjoy going out to work , i am proud to be a member of the working community , if not for my own sanity , my own pride and self respect ..
So on this issue i am really undecided ...
on one hand why should the tax payers pay for someone elses children and on the other i do understand how hard it is and i also understand that not everyone can get out there and get a job, due to lack of childcare facilities ... Not everyones circumstances are the same...
I think too much of the onus is put upon the mothers , i think there should be tougher measures for absent fathers , those who do not pay and support their children ....
its a tough one .... |

I think its really difficult for lone parents. Most are female and are taking on ,loads of responsibilty which is unshared anyway. there is help out there but its not easy to find and if you are in the poverty trap you will find it keeps getting deeper and deeper. have you heard of gingerbread a organistion with a telephone help line for loneparents
answer to your question: no |

Let's get one thing straight a child has 2 parents.
I feel genuinely sorry for someone who is a widow or widower.
These parents deserve a lot of help.
But a woman who gets herself pregnant, while single, without any thought to the future consequences of how they are going to manage financially after the baby is born deserve no sympathy.
As for only being £12 per week better off by going to work, this margin should be higher. The way to make it higher is to reduce the level of benefits.
It makes my blood boil when I hear of people with half a dozen kids getting £30,000 in benefits. |

No they don't although it is better than it was. I'm not sure how they worked out your tax credits without you having a deffinite salary to go by. They are worked out on how much you earn and how much the government says you need to live on. I know of lots of single parents who manage better on Tax Credits than they did previously on unemployment benefit. However it still isn't enough for todays living costs, they don't take into account your outgoings like rent etc. |

i dont think they do, i was a single parent living in a rented flat with my son. The flat was in a deprived area which i ended up frightened to live in. The council refused to move me. My then boyfriend and i didnt live together as a couple as we both enjoyed our own independence. We ended up with no choice other than to buy a house together - it was the only way out for me. This then led to serious financial difficulties as i took on more than i could afford. I didnt tell the tax credit office that we had moved into together and this has now landed me in serious trouble. |

im a single mum and i get no help at all off my daughters dad, i work now and am a lot better off then what i was when on benefits, they will help you with rent, and childcare etc..... i dont know how thy came up with £12 a week, i am about £70 a week better off now, thats not including my wages..... i think that things are getting easier for single parents now, easier then they where at least!
i truly feel for you, i struggled badly before i worked, but everyones situation is different i guess.
i hope you manage to get sorted :)
also i too love working, its great for self esteem, and its great to know you are providing for your kids, so id say that feeling of well being in itself is worth £12 extra a week
i know everyones circumstances are different, and they should prob do more to help single parents.....
i wish you all the luck in the world :)
in response to iain ts comments, i think that is extremley judgemental of you, how do you know peoples situations?
i was in a relationship when i got pregnant, he decided he didnt want anything to do with it, and went...that was not my choice...it was his
what about fathers that do that? isnt it sometimes their faults too?
i never intended to be a single mum, but it happened....does that make me a bad parent or a irresponsible person because i chose to have my daughter and not abort her?
open your eyes iain, sometimes things arent always as they seem |
