Do the Amish have to pay taxes?

San Jose
of course they do. They have income and they live in the United States.

They also pay property taxes

cynic47
They do pay income and property taxes. They do not have to pay Social Security and Medicare taxes if self-employed, but that also means they do not collect Social Security or Medicare benefits.

"Many people think the Amish do not pay taxes. They do. But they have been exempted from paying Social Security."

Yes, the Old Order Amish are required to pay taxes, including property, sales, income, and in some states inventory tax.
IRS form 4029 is filed once a young person is baptised and becomes a Church member, thereby exempting them from paying and also collecting any social security payments.

It's been stated that they "use our roads, but don't pay road tax".
Nor do bicycles, tractors, joggers, or folks riding horseback
However, in most all communites, the Amish indirectly pay road use tax because many of the vehicles are using fuel on account of the Amish, either freight or taxi.

Concerning property tax, bear this in mind:
In most counties in the US, approx. 50% (+/-) is allocated towards public school, where few Amish use the public school system, yet still support it through their tax dollars. And, totally self support their own schools without county, federal, or state aid.

Everyone has to pay taxes other than religious groups. If they own houses, farms or sell products they are required to pay the same taxes that every US citizen does.

Many run stores and most sell some type of goods and services. While their religion and beliefs prohibit operating machinery, they do have to pay property and sales tax.

They are only exempt from Social Security and Medicare taxes on self-employment income. For everything else they are treated like normal people.

peacefuldisaster
Yes, they pay income, sales, and property taxes. They must file federal, state, and local income tax returns just like any other citizen.

They do not pay SSI tax if they are self employed, work for their family business, or work for any other Amish owned business because they are allowed to opt out of the SSI system. This also means they will never collect any SSI benefits. However, they must pay SSI taxes if they work for a non-Amish owned business, even though they will never apply for the benefits.
