Do the Rich have a Moral Obligation to pay Higher Taxes?

Clark Kent
No. I believe Judge Learned Hand explained it best: no one is obligated to arrange his affairs to pay more than the law requires.

Your only obligation is to follow the laws which have nothing to do with morals.

You could just as well ask if there is a moral obligation to avoid becoming rich. If we followed that philosophy, there would be very little progress in the world. The big producers of goods and services do it to get rich.

No, they earned that money. They still pay highER taxes, but the base percentages should not move.

I don't see it as a moral obligation, but under current US laws it it a LEGAL obligation - and I don't see it as unfair.

Okay that is an interesting question.

I dont think they have a moral obligation but they pay less taxes. Im not saying what I made last year, im not rich or not poor but I was around 35K in taxes. I took every damn deduction I could. But I paid it. And I get I might pay more in taxes a year then some people make. Thats not higher taxes.

To give you an example. Warren Buffet put up a million dollars cash. And said if there is any CEO in a fortune 500 company that pays more taxes (percentage wise) then your secretary. You get the million bucks.

Nobody took his offer, because they knew percentage wise their secretaries pay a helluva lot more.

So to your question, if it was even the rich people would be paying alot more then they are now. It just isnt.

Someone on this list who claims to be a "tax pro" said the rich only pay 10% cap gains on their dividends. This is *TOTALLY* wrong. The 10% tax is only taken out ofter you first pay the coporate gains tax. So let's say the owners of a company want to pull money out of the company they own (which is any stock owner) and pay it to themselves. First they pay a 35% corporate income tax. Now they have $0.65. If they have to pay state tax they are down to $0.55. THEN once they pay the $0.55 to themselves they own the dividend tax which reduces this to about $0.45. So they started owning $1/share worth of the company and they only got $0.45 after the gov't took their cut. This is why the dividend tax is called a "double" tax or an "additional" tax because it is *ONLY* paid on money that you already paid taxes on.

They have no moral obligation to pay any more than the government demands.

No. People making higher incomes should have a legal obligation to pay a greater amount of taxes.

Sure. To whom much is given, much is expected.

And our tax policies have GREATLY assisted them in growing their wealth. Such as capital gains tax of 10-15% (which McCain wants to eliminate) on the sale of stocks and equities, while working stiffs pay 20-50% taxes for the sweat of their brows.
