Do you agree that we should pay for refuse collection on top of Council Tax in the UK?
If UK citizens are asked to pay twice for refuse removal I believe that the objection to this will be seen by the number of rubbish bags thrown out of car windows on the grass verges.

How will this extra charge be monitored? Who will keep the records - the refuse collection men? Who will administer the bills - another 1million council workers employed throughout the UK who will cost far more than the income generated!

We will end up with locks on our wheelie bins to stop sneaky neighbours depositing their excess in other people's bins.

And all in the name of Global Warming - I think not. I believed in Global Warming until the word 'environmental taxes' were mentioned, now the credibility of the idea of Global Warming has been compromised by our politicians, as I believe it's just another way to raise taxes to pay the bloated salaries and index linked pensions of state employees and politicians.

Well, we can do something about it and if you visit my petition below [in a couple of days when/if it's approved by No 10 you can sign it. Let's aim for 1,000,000 minimum?

If these crooks think I'm paying for waste collection without reducing my Council Tax then I'll just be driving off somewhere at night to dump my rubbish! Me and about 10 million others, no doubt!
Did you see the thing on the news tonight where some councillor from Hull was saying the government was charging the city extra to dump all the people's belongings that were ruined by the floods earlier in the year? Unbelieveable!

Phew... that was a rant! :-)

Too right though, I think it is outrageous. My council tax is £1300 a year for a one bedroomed flat with a communal bin that gets emptied once a week. The grounds have to be maintained by the residents, even though they are owned by the borough of Camden. I understand the need for council tax but it seems excessive. Adding a refuse collection charge on top of this would be disgraceful. I'm fed up of everybody from politicians to corporations jumping on the green bandwagon for nothing more than PR and/or commercial gain.

I better stop now, am starting to rant also

I don't agree at all that we should have to pay for rubbish we throw away. It'll cause loads of problems. I suppose we could always burn it and see what the Government thinks of that! I agree with your thoughts entirely. It's the a***h***s in the European Parliament who are to blame really. This Country has to pay fines if we do not recycle more rubbish. Then again, can't the Government fiddle the figures like they have done in the past.

The One
well who else is going to pay for the MPs holidays

Chris
No effing way. When they clean the streets of the dog sh1t, I might think about it. Maybe

God help the people that live in our council area, when we recycle all we get is that's the wrong kind of cardboard and paper, they will only take plastic milk bottles if the top has been removed, water and pop bottles not a chance in hell. Polystyrene you have no chance, not even the bin men take that

Many coucils have already put refuse collection out to private companies. these companies will get their money one way or another.

The UK is to be fined if it does not meet land fill targets soon so there is no choice in the matter really. But in my opinion all it will do is turn neighbour against neighbour as disputes arise about putting rubbish in others' bins. Will those on benefit be exempt? If so it will put even more strain on those who work to pay their bills

it is all very unfair.

JAMES -
All the councilors really want is for THEM to be rich
and the could not care less how they do it. Everyone is trying to be a millionaire, Doctors, Vets,
M P's, Banks, Councilors, Garages, Builders,
It goes on and on and on..........& and they have us all by the BALLS and there is nothing we can do about it.

I hope you get lots of answers, maybe someone will listen, but I doubt it. No, of course not. Its a ludicrous idea. I won't dump on the streets, but I would take it to the tip, thus polluting the environment more. Nothing to do with the environment, just another blasted tax. How will they justify council tax charges, if we are having to pay for services seperately? Will families with more than one child have to pay more for using the school system more frequently? (hope that hasn't given Gordon Brown another idea!)

No of course not. As you say, people will just fly tip. Global warming is a giant swindle. And I like you used to belive in it but not anymore. We are just entering a warm period..that's all!

the rocket
We are already being taken for mugs. You are correct in all of what you say. Will we be entitled to rebates.I do believe that we are going to pay for going green.Do not get me wrong we should try to cut back on pollution.Big business likeairlines etc should be held more to bear the cost as they contribute more than anyone. Also your point about more large salaries for the implementation bodies well taxes will rise and we will pay!.

traceydavo07
no, i think its a disgrace to charge ppl for paying to want to get rid of their rubbish, this will lead to fly tipping and that is more of a problem were i live at the moment!, where does the money go that they are going to charge???, greedy f*@$ers=rhmes with suckers

As I understand the proposals they are designed to be broadly neutral in revenue terms so overall the tax paid will not be increased.

This will not be strictly true since there will be additional administration costs which will have to be paid by us so there will be a small increase.

This needs to be compared to the increase that will have to be imposed to pay the fines for not reching the landfill targets.

It is true that soneone who can't be bothered to reduce the amount they send to landfill will have to pay more. I assume you include yourself in this category? Others who make more effort will actually be better off.

I think the biggest problem with the proposals will be the temptation to fly-tip to save money. It is all well and good to introduce large fines but how will they be enforced?

It will be impossible to implement. for all the reasons you've already mentioned. There is no way the public will accept a "top up" charge, we either get a gradual reduction in our council tax and a supplementary charge for our waste or there will be mass uproar. Either way I can't see it working and fly tipping will hit an all time high without a doubt.
