Do you all pay your council tax or do you believe it is unfair as I do, being on a very low wage?
Do you agree it should be means tested?

We pay just over £150 per month in Council Tax. We are Pensioners, and due to some bum decisions, and some awful luck throughout our working lives, we have no house that we own, and we rent. So immediately 1st of each month, we have to pay out close on £1000. Yes, it keeps a roof over our head, but as for the Council Tax ..... I've yet to see a road sweeper outside, we never see the police, we don't use the schools, yes, we get a garbage collection and the street lights remain on (actually I wish they'd turn them off at midnight).

As we recently had a small inheritance, which has put our savings above the thresh-hold, we no longer qualify for Housing or Council Tax Benefit (which is good, to a point, I guess), so we are stuffed. Unless we go to jail for non-payment! Basically we dip into our 'savings' regularly, and as far as I'm concerned, once that's gone, we go back onto Benefits..... and that's life, for us, and I suspect, a lot more out there!!

I think, whatever is done to improve the situation, the system currently stinks.

I agree with you it should be means tested it's not fair that poorer people should have to pay the full price

It is not fair and should be adjusted accordingly I believe with Pres Elect O'Bama things might pick up real soon.... Good luck Grant M in Pennsylvania

I do believe that it should be means tested, someone earning £250,000 a year should pay more than someone who is earning just £10,000 a year. To me it seems quite silly that both pay the exact same amount depending on their banding, seems obvious that the person earning more more is more able to afford it.

Thanks and best wishes :)

I pay council tax and it amounts to over £1200 a year and I am on a fixed pension. I always thought that the fairest way was for every person in work to pay an amount. This would relieve the burden from home owners as everybody will be paying. It was tried some years ago and called the Community Charge later known as the Poll Tax. It was abolished due to riots etc over it and these were largely people that objected to this tax as they had not paid anything before. Sadly is is back on us householders to carry the charge for the rest of the population. In short it is so unfair.

You should have a Means Test contact your Local Council Office you may have to go in to see them.
But, I do agree everyone should pay something.

A friend got 6 months in prison for non payment. The prison he was supposed to go to was full so he ended up in a maximum security one full of very unpleasant people and miles away from home. Not a nice experience so he now pays!

Yes hun ..it`s very unfair. Some houses in my road have 4 wage earners ..whilst some have one person to cough up the same amount of council tax . .

Council tax is based on the rateable value of your house. So if you have more than one person living there it is shared. If you cannot afford to pay you surely can get benefit. Or get a better wage. Or economise on other things. Unfortunately it can be a hard life for anyone but we have to pay for the services we all use, or are available otherwise those workers will get a lower wage and so on. Ok so there is a lot of wastage in Local Authority but that is another matter to protest about.

Yes, I do pay my council tax, as it is a priority payment and if I don't, I could end up in prison. Yes of course I grudge paying it, doesn't everyone? If you are on a low income, you may be entitled to council tax benefit, which is means tested.
