Do you always get money back on taxes when you own a home?

no, depends on how much you withhold from your paycheck and how well your investments do. you can work it to just reduce your withholding from like 30% to 20% and get no refund.

No, you don't

It depends on the things that you write off on your taxes and how much you made during the year

knowssignlanguage
No my mom acutally owed taxes and she owns her home.

I'm pretty sure you can deduct the interest you pay on your mortgage on your taxes

island3girl
no, not necessarily. a tax refund is due only if you have overpaid taxes. there are also credits and deductions figured in so there is no guarantee of a refund

fluke
depends on how much you make

No. Owning a home allows you to deduct property taxes and interest payments. But getting an income tax refund has more to do with the amount withheld than anything else.

Pam H
No, it depends on facors like how much tax you had withheld to begin with, deductions, mortgage interest paid, total income, etc.

taxreff
No. I have many clients who are homeowners and have a balance due on 4-15.

Its important to remember that getting a refund or owing is only a comparison between the total tax after credits on one's 1040 and what one paid in during the year. There are no automatic circumstances (such as owning a home, being a student, being retired, etc.) which cause someone to always get a refund.

ONLY if your mortgage interest is enough to reduce your income tax bracket so you would get money back in excess tax paid. In which case you've been giving the government interest-free money! The BEST thing is to not OWE any taxes and not PAY any additional taxes by accurately adjusting your witholding.
