chicken2008 | Do you do your own taxes or do you pay someone else to do them? |
I go to the library every year and get them done for free. I probably could just do them myself. Mine are usually pretty much the same every year. |

Most people do not need a professional to prepare their tax returns. For many years I have made educating my clients part of my practice. I had hoped that would cull out the clients that really didn't need my services...but it back fired. They were even more loyal.
The real question is your knowledge of the tax laws and your comfort level in preparing your own return. In most cases it is straight forward if you understand the tax laws. I have one client that actually brings me a prepared 1040 and for the past ten years it has had no mistakes...but, she insists that she would rather pay me to look it over rather than simply mailing it herself.
However, with that said...if you are not sure about something it is always better to ask before you commit yourself. Usually once you make a decision and act there is very little that can be done to undo the damage if it is not done correctly to begin with. By that I mean tax planning...mistakes on a tax form are easy to correct.
In your case going to the library and getting them done for free is not a bad idea...two sets of eyes and training will only help and all it costs you is a little bit of time.
Hope this helps. |

I do my own. But I'm one of those people at the library (and three senior centers on other days) DOING the taxes.
If yours are pretty straightforward, you could do them yourself using the previous year's return as a guide. |

It is always better to learn about your own taxes. So you should try to do it yourself. Only if there is any difficulty or some income requires special treatment, then you can use tax professional or ask at Yahoo Answers.
