Do you ever have to stop filing your taxes?
My grandma has this idea that she doesn't have to file taxes anymore because she is of a certain age. I don't even know when the last time she filed was. She only collects social security but she has a mortgage she could write off and also a dependent. Should she go back and file all the past years she didn't file?

If the only income she is receiving is from her Social Security, than she does NOT need to file. Since that portion of her income is NOT taxable, there is no need to file. MOREOVER: Since she doesn't owe taxes, she is not due a return. So she could not collect a refund from the government for her mortgage, since there is no where for the refund to come from. When you get a refund, it is a refund on that with which you put in. Since she put nothing in to the pot, there is nothing from which to obtain from.

On a side note:
Regarding the message you sent me....you don't accept replies, or emails....so I cant respond to your inquiry. Is there another means I can go about addressing your message?

You don't stop because of age, you stop/don't file because of low income. She needs to talk to the IRS.

It's not her age, it's her income - if her only income is social security, she doesn't have to file. Since she doesn't owe any tax, she can't write off her mortgage income, since she doesn't have any taxable income for it to reduce - and that's what deductions do, they reduce your taxable income.

Leave grandma alone - she's right that she doesn't have to file and there's no benefit to her in filing.
