I was a Texas resident for many years. Texas does not have a state income tax.

However, you mentioned you just moved there so you will be required to pay state tax to the state you just moved from if you worked while you were living there.

Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming, New Hampshire and Tennessee do not have state taxes.

No, we have no state income tax. The state, city, county and schools all receive their funding through property taxes here. That's why the property taxes here seem so high to everyone moving here.

Also, since property taxes are so high here, that's why a mortgage payment for a certain price home in Texas is higher than a mortgage payment in another state for a similarly priced home. (the escrow is so much higher)

IF YOU ARE A LEGAL RESIDENT OF TEXAS THEN--NO!! MY HUSBAND IS AND SINCE HE IS IN THE MILITARY, WE NEVER HAVE TO PAY STATE TAXES FOR HIM:)

There is no state income tax in Texas. As long as you have no income from other states, there is no return to file.

If you work outside of Texas, ie Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico... you will have to pay taxes in those states even if you do live in Texas.

My husband had Louisiana taxes taken out of his paycheck in 2010 because his employer failed to change his office location in their system to Texas. He did not live or work in Louisiana in 2010. Now we have to file a LA State tax return and will not get back money that is really ours. How can we get back the money that was mistakenly taken out of his check because of this screw up? The employer dragged their feet in correcting it, but it is now costing us money that we shouldn't have to pay. What should we do?
