Not necessarily.... Look it up to be sure but if your income is under 8,200 you don't have to file.
Go to http://www.irs.gov/ and answer their questions to find out for sure.

Keep in mind that if you do file and you qualify for the earned income credit you could receive a substantial refund even more than you paid in.

wow

The other answers are all over the place and mostly wrong.

The answer depends on if somebody can claim you as a dependent or not.

If somebody can claim you then the you should file. The standard deduction of 5000 does not apply to dependents. I am not exactly sure of the number but I believe that it is if you have less then $250 of earned income (interest, dividends, cap gains are not earned income).

Even with that low of income if you are a dependent then you may actually owe tax. However in most cases you may get a refund. Regardless of if you owe or are getting a refund the amound is likely to be small.

On the other hand if you are not a dependent then you do not have to file. And BTW there are plenty of people who only recieve social security who do not file taxes even though they have filed in the past.

Even if you do not have to file there most likely were witholdings from your earnigs and by filing you can get a refund. In addition you would be eligable for the earned income credit wich can give you an additional refund because your income is so low.

no the smallest standard deduction is 5000 the personal exemption 3200 your taxable income is zero. only file if you had witholding to get that back

What are you complaining about? there are two things in life that you are guaranteed to do, die and pay taxes. File your tax statement, and in a couple of months you'll have all of your money back. To people like you income tax time is a good thing, because when you make that little, the government gives it all back. Try making $20,000 a year and trying to live with no outside help what-so-ever. You have to pay all of your living expenses, and the government has no shame on you. If you don't like to pay taxes move to a third world country somewhere and enjoy your life.

No, you don't. You have 3 years on every year to file.

You ALWAYS have to file a tax return!

Besides, if that is all your income, if you don't file, you won't get your refund. (and you WILL get a refund if you only made $2,800)

Those previous answers are INCORRECT!!! You DO NOT have to file if you are under the filing limit, WHICH IS: $5000, or less, of earned income.

BUT, you SHOULD file a tax return anyway, because if you make under $5000, then that means that you will get every last penny back.

Once you file taxes for the first time, you must file every year afterwards for the rest of your life. Even if you made nothing, you still have to confess to your bloated greedy government.
