Do you have to file taxes if your only income is Social Security and child support?

No. Neither Social Security nor child support would be taxable in this case.

Child support is never taxable, and Social Security is only taxable if you have other income in excess of certain thresholds. Since you have no other income, your Social Security is not be taxable.

You are not eligible for the Earned Income Credit because you have no earned income.

v b
No. Child support is not income. If your only income is Social Security, it's not taxable unless you are living with a spouse and filing MFS.

No income, no filing requirement.

YoungGirl
no you do not!! Child support is not taxable. Social security is not taxable unless the social security income is over $25,000.00. I have been a tax preparer for over 9 years. Also, you will not receive EIC, the income you received is not earned.

better be safe and go in and see if you have to file. there are some SS that is taxable. not just if it is over 25,000. but yea if you go you will get EIC also and get a refund.
