Do you have to pay back at tax time partial the money you get from unemployment benefits?

the Boss
I believe you could pay tax on it as income, but you don't pay it back.

Yes, unless you've already gotten the 10% (I think its 10%, something percentage wise), back before you receive the check. Thats what my husband has been doing, automatically getting the tax deduction taken out of his check, instead of paying for it when tax time rolls around.

Sort of.

The unemployment is added to the rest of your income. If you already had enough income to be owing tax, then the unemployment is taxable at your marginal tax rate. The lowest tax bracket is 10%.

If you are in the lowest tax bracket and had them withhold 10% for taxes, you sort of break even. Many people are in a higher tax bracket and owe.

King Cobra
You don't pay back your unemployment but you do have to claim your unemployment on your taxes.

The only time you have to pay anything is if you DIDN'T get the taxed taken out. They will be accounted for on your fed tax's

Unemployment comp is taxable income, so if your income for the year is high enough to owe any tax, yes you will pay tax on the benefits.

foreverjandc
As long as you had the taxes taken out while collecting unemployment benefits you will not have to pay any furthur taxes at the end of the year. That's what I did and I don't have to pay in anything.

If when u filed you chose the option to have them take 10% out of ur check u'll get a refund from that and if u didnt choose that option u'll have to pay taxes on ur unemployment compensation.

You have to report this as income on your taxes. So, if you did not have anything taken out for federal taxes...it is possible you will have to pay back some to the government. Go to irs.gov website and click on the free file information. You can go into one of th eprograms and file your taxes for free and know how much you will either have to owe or get refunded. Good luck!
