Do you have to pay council tax if you havent yet moved in?
I'm going to be renting for a month before i move in simply to avoid the rush of people looking to move after xmas but do i still have to pay 1 months council tax even if im not there and there's no water/electric etc?

yes you do, however if you can prove you arent living there ie no furniture in it, then you can apply for an exemption for upto 6 months, if it has previously been under an exempition then you can claim a non occupied discount which is 25% off.
we bought a house which was a repossession, it had been vacant for 3 months and had been exempt from council tax. however after another 3 months we were still no where near being able to move in due to the condition, i applied for a second exeption but was told that as we had already had 6 months we couldnt have longer but they gave us the 25% discount.
you need to call your local tax office and explain all to them, they will then advise you what to do next.

check out this webiste and the link on the left for council tax exemptions and reductions http://www.westlothian.gov.uk/917/592/?srid=1839674

dont try adn avoid paying it, you will be caught out as when you come to pay it they will ask for the date you bought the property and if you lie they will ask who was responsible for the property the month before, they will then query the previous owners who will show them that they had moved out and you had bought it, then you will be fined too! not worth the risk. call the tax affice and sort it out!

You will be liable for payment from the start date of your tenancy. however, if the property is empty & unfurnished (this is kind of up to each individual Council to decide what they deem empty to be!) then you can be granted a Class C exemption (zero charge) for this month you are not living there. If it is furnished, you can still get a furnished let discount which can be up to 50% depending on the Council.

Ring your local council and tell them the house is empty, you wont have to pay council tax until you move in as long as that's within six months after that you will have to start paying

I'd say no but i'm sure ive heard before and seen people who own properties pay a small percentage of council tax as they arent livin there but own it , like a lower rate

Could be wrong though

WelshLad
If there is furniture then yes.

spring_rainbows
No not if you don't move your furniture in, you will ahve to notify the council stating that the property will be empty and they will deduct a certain amount for that month. It happened to me when i moved into my flat, as i hadn't moved my furniture for 3 weeks they deducted that from my bill as i wasn't using council services!

peachschnappereturns
You are liable for the council tax from the date you moved in however you may be entitled to a discount or exemption whilst the property us unoccupied.

If the property is unoccupied and unfurnished then you can received a Class C exemption for the property unless the previous owner used the full 6 month exemption in which case you can only received a zero occupancy discount (between 50% and 0% depending on the council).

If the property is unoccupied and furnished then you are entitled to a furnished property discount (between 50% and 10% depending on the council).

Of course, you don't think they are going to let that one pass.

no

Check with the council - if the building is uninhabitable you may qualify for discount. Have you told the council you've moved? If not I suggest keeping schtum and just inform them when you actually move in, other wise you could end up paying two lots of council tax, including for the rented property.
