You still have to pay a proportion, but not the full amount. I think it's half the normal amount, but you definately have to pay some.

we have a second home and get a 50% discount as it isn't used. there's a certain proportion of hte year it has to be empty to qualify. We also qualify because my occupation has made us live elsewhere in a house we have to live in because of my job and it's the only house we actually own. If you own both properties it may be different. Ask your council.
If you are rennovating it, you may get exemption for a year - we did. But this may depend upon the council you are with.

Darren
It may depend on your taxing authority. You contact your council tax office in the first instance.

Generally, you pay a discounted rate for an unoccupied property that is still furnished.

You can get a further discount if the property is unoccupied and 'substantially unfurnished'.

You must usually complete an application form with your local council office.

There may be more savings to be had if you can identify that house is in the wrong council tax band. There has been alot of press coverage regarding this lately and people have been able to recover about a £1000 in lost council taxes by proving that there houses are in a higher band than there neighbours with a similar or same house.

unfortunately yes you will have to pay council tax on your second house even if it is empty, its a way of the government to get money out of you, they always find a way.
I have just had a letter about council tax and how they work, you pay different amounts for different areas for example in peterlee county Durham you have Easington village that pays £800 a year on council tax Then you have Easington Colliery which is just down the road and they pay £1000 a year.
My advice is to phone the council tax department and ask them how much it is going to cost.

I would think so. This website should be able to make it a little more clearer to you.

Yes you do, not sure if its at a reduced rate, check with local council, failing that take the roof off, then you dont have to pay.
