Most citizens have social security cards as babies now so that parents can claim them as dependents on taxes. If you are a citizen, and do not have a card, you would need to take some form (better two than one) of identification to the local Social Security office. Birth certificates, driver's license, other picture ID might be helpful. A birth certificate OR driver's license may be all you need. You will fill out a form - it is free - and in a few weeks your card will be mailed to you. If you need proof that you have applied for a new card or you need proof of your social security number, ask the clerks at the office. They can give you a computer printout showing your card number and a letter stating that you have applied. (In case you have a job waiting on verification or something and need one quickly.) |
