Do you have to pay tax on second job at the age of 16?
Well im 16 and i was wondering if i get another job, whether i would be taxed or not. Im in full time education if that makes any difference.

First and foremost your age and the fact that you are in full time education has nothing to do with how much tax you pay.

What it all boils down to is if your combined income exceeds your personal allowance.

For the tax year just ended the personal allowance was £5035.00 that means if your income from whatever source exceeds this amount you will pay tax.

For the tax year just started (2007 - 2008) your personal allowance is £5225.00.

If you have more than one job, then you have to decide who is your main employer, (usually the first employer) and they will apply your personal allowance, any further employers will not give you a tax allowance and charge at the Basic Rate as all your allowances have been used up by the first employer.

If your first job pays more than £2230 then you will have used up your 10% tax band, and all your earnings from then on are charged at 22%.

The changes that the chancellor made in the recent budget where he scrapped the 10% band and lowered the next band to 20% does not start until the tax year 2008-2009.

If you need more info then contact your local tax office.

All earnings are taxed, from all sources, above your free allowance.

If you earned less than 5,035 pounds in the 2006/2007 tax year (just ended) or if you are going to earn less than 5,225 pounds this year then you should not be taxed.

It does not make a difference what age you are, if you have 2 jobs, or are in full time education.

You are probably due a tax rebat e though if you have been paying tax in your pay and are in full time education.

To get this rebate you can either contact the inland revenue, which can be quite time consuming and very complicated if you do not know what you are doing. Alternatively you can use a company such as:

http://www.TAXFIX.co.uk

who will get back any over payment of tax for you. I know that this company operates on a 'No tax rebate, No fee' basis so you have nothing to loose in trying to get your taxes back.

I hope this helps.

If you earn over the personal allowance (£5225 in 2007-08) then of course you pay tax, whether you are in full time education or not. Although quite why you are not concentrating on your studies is beyond me. There is plenty of time for earning money later. Get your grades first.

There is an ammount you can earn before you pay tax once you hit that ammount then you start to pay tax regardless of being in education. Think its about £4000 per year. You will also be taxed more by hvaing 2 jobs always your second job lesser hours the tax will be slightly higher

then there is NI contributions............for me as self employed it,s 8% of taxable earnings after personal allowance.....don,t actually know how much employed person pays .....then there is pension lol........welcome to the world of where you though you were rich but you arn,t he he

You are Taxed on EARNINGS. irrespective of time spent at school/college/work

There IS a personal Annual Allowance, Your Tax Code, {in 2007-2008 This will be £5225}, above which deductions will be made from your earnings...
