Do you have to put postage stamps on income tax returns when sending to IRS?
I was told a few years ago that no postage is necessary if mailed from the post office. I don't think that sounds legit, and I was wondering if someone knows for sure. Do you know?

But did you get some bad information. Yes you have to use the correct postage. I have been doing my own taxes for over thirty years and what was told to you was complete nonsense.

Of course you do. They provide an envelope made out to the proper place or you put the proper label they provide in the tax booklet on the front of it, but there is no stamp then until you apply one where it belongs. This is a federal agency you are sending it to, they will want you to pay the postage.LOL I never saw them provide any postage for this.

Yes, you need proper postage.

Angie
It certainly is one of my pet peeves. If they want their money, the least they could do is supply postage paid envelopes. However, they don't. You must pay the postage.

dmg1969
Yes. Unless you want it returned, you need to put postage on it.

They spacifically state on the mailing instructions that they will not pay your postage, and the envelope will be sent back to you, and if you owed taxes you will be liable for the penalties and interest...

You were told wrong. If you don't put the proper postage on it, it won't be delivered and will be returned to you.

OFFICER SEXY PEACH
no,not true at all,the only time u do not need a stamp on mail u send is if u have a self addressed stamped envelope from person u are sending the mail to.

Of you have to use postage, the post office will not sort unstamped mail to be delivered, they will send it back for postage.

Only if you want them delivered.

You did have correct information. A few years ago, you did not have to pay postage. I think that someone at the government must have realized what an opportunity they were missing to get more of our money in their pockets.
