Xcrunner | Do you need a SSN to get a tax preparer license? |
If you wanted to get a tax preparer license, do you need to have a social security number? |

There are very few places in America that require a license to prepare taxes. Strange, but true.
On any tax return you prepare for money, you have to put either your social security number, or a PTIN, a preparer tax identification number. On the application for a PTIN, they ask for your social security number. http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw7p.pdf
So, basically, you need a SSN to prepare taxes. |

Yes, you need a SSN to obtain a tax preparer Identification number. A Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) is not a license and there is no requirements to be met to obtain a PTIN other than having a valid Social Security number. In fact the only purpose of the PTIN is so that you as a paid taxpreparer do not have to disclose your social security number on the tax return. Sorry.. |
