Do you think I am getting ripped off?
They took taxes out of my Christmas bonus.

WTF?

They didn't do it last year or the year before, what gives?

Your Christmas bonus is taxable income to you. It will appear with your other income on your W-2 form you receive at the end of the year.

If your employer did withhold too much tax withholding on this payment, the tax withholding is just included in your total withholding anyway. Any excess tax withheld will be refunded to you when you file your tax return, or will go toward reducing the amount of taxes you owe.

Your employer does not actually tax your pay, they simply withhold some of it for for you to go toward paying your tax bill at the end of the year. If they are withholding too much, you can go to your employer's payroll or personnel office and have them raise or reduce the amount of tax withholding that they withhold from your pay.

hey at least you got a bonus... some people dont even have jobs....be thankfull that you got something-its better than nothing....

They always take taxes out of mine, this way they can report it and get their money and keeps them safe . Doesn't really sound like such a christmas bonus after all does it, I don';t agree with this idea either..

Well if they did not do it past years then your company made a BIG BIG mistake. The FICA (7.65%) is a non-refundable tax that will come out no matter what. The Federal and state taxes are refundable to you depending on your taxable income for the year. Bonus payments are required to be withheld at 25% according to the regs www.irs.gov Circular E Publication. If your effective tax rate is 15% then you will get the difference 10% as a refund.

I dont think you are because every extra money one gets at the work place eg. bonuses or whatever they name it they always deduct taxes, maybe you were overlooked last year.

a Christmas bonus is wages, it depends on how your company filed it, but you should of filed on your tax return.

Faedra D
Being taxed on your bonus doesn't mean you are being ripped off especially since Bonuses are taxed differently than regular wages. They are taxed usually by the following amounts:

Fed Withhold 25%
State Withhold 7.35%
City (if applicable) 4.0%

Louis G
They should have taken taxes out every time. Bonuses are taxed at the highest possible tax bracket. Only after you file your income tax returns will you get back any excess taxes which were deducted. My bonus has been taxed every year that I recieved one.
