Set apart | Do you think Medical expenses should be a write off? |
My father said that anything 4,000 and above is a write off but we both think it would be beneficial to everyone if they made even prescription, routine exams and other small medical related things a write off.
What are some reasons this would be a bad idea... I heard of a case where a woman got breasts implants because she was a stripper and wrote them off. She was audited by the IRS but she won the case. |

Your father is incorrect. Medical expenses can be deductible when they exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income for the year. So if your adjusted gross income is 30,000 then the first $2250 isn't deductible - just the amount above that. The things you mention - prescriptions, routine exams, etc.. are in fact the qualified expenses in addition you can count eye glasses, sick visits, procedures (not cosmetic - they aren't qualified expenses unless correcting a deformity), physical therapy, dental, lab fees, testing fees, mileage to and from appointments, etc......
I can think of no bad reason to allow this write off. In fact I would like to see the 7.5% threshold lowered to help the millions of people who self-pay everything because they are uninsured right now. I mean they let us write of a host of stupid things like union dues and tax prep fee if they exceed 2% but make us exceed 7.5% to write of medical expenses to keep us healthy and alive - little out of whack in my humble opinion. |

Medical expenses are a write-off, but it is not the amount that your father thinks it is. You can deduct anything above 7.5% of your AGI as a itemized deduction. The dollar amount will vary for every single person. |

I don't know any worst case scenarios for you. However, that would be awesome if medical expenses, even the minute (e.g. prescriptions, etc.) things too, could be written off. My mom's medical bills have been out of the roof (that doesn't sound right...) this past year - she's been through a lot. *shakes head* It would be nice if it happened. *sighs* |

Medical expenses (to the extent they exceed insurance coverage) are a write off if you have enough total expenses to raise your deductions above the standard deduction.
The stripper story is folklore. Any medical procedure qualifies, breast implants included. Dental procedures too.
The IRS continues to strive to make tax reporting both fair and simple. That is the reason for the standard deduction. Even if you don't have any medical expenses, you get the standard deduction.
This year, the standard deduction for a couple who are married filing jointly is $10,900.
The IRS figures, no matter what you had to spend or didn't have to spend, then we're going to exempt the first $10,900 of your income from income tax. You don't need to keep a bunch of records and/or fill out a bunch of forms and schedules. Just right off the bat, you don't pay on the first $10,900 you earned.
If your total expenses exceed $10,900, then you are going to need the receipts to prove it, and you need to fill out the schedules to account for everything you've spent.
The bottom line is that the government needs a certain amount of money in order to pay its bills each year. That money comes from the tax payers. You can make it "look" any way you want to, but in the end you'll end up paying in what the government needs to operate. |

As like with many laws in the USA, they are poorly written and allow multiple lupoles to as what is meant.
A good example, my medical expenses bankrupted me, BUT I didn't have enough to deduct them from my taxes; GO FIGURE!!! |

any kind of cosmetic surgery that is not benificial to health should not be allowed to be written off. i for one do not want to and cannot afford to pay for someone elses breasts, lips,or nose,etc... what gets written off for someone, has to be paid for by someone else. i also don't believe that my tax money should have to pay for some bored teenager to have a baby just because he/she felt they didn't have anything better to do but have sex and get pregnant. |
