Mr B
Do you think paying $1250 per month in rent is a reasonable amount on a $38,000 salary?

It depends on what city you live in and what the going rates are. Generally I would say that's pretty high, it's around 50% of your income. Also does it include utilties or not, and how big is the place.

I live on Chicago's north side, in a pretty decent neighborhood, make almost double your salary and pay slightly less for an 800sf 1 br, and I think it's a little high.

It seems like a lot but rent is high everywhere you look and you may not have a choice.

It's quite high -- too high really. That works out to $15,000 per year or nearly 40% of your gross pay. You should be aiming closer to 25% and no more than 30% if at all possible, or between $800 and $950 or so.

I pay about that on a $35,000 salary and it's way too much imo so I'm looking for something a little cheaper. It depends on where you live though, and if you have a ton of bills.
