Do you think people with low income should pay taxes?

The current system of offering EIC to low income families has created the following phenom.

Poor people think a tax return and a tax refund are the same thing. They don't see the tax return as a piece of paper, reporting their income and the refund being a calculation on that form. They don't see tax time as sending the return in, but rather getting money back.

Yet, they will still convince themselves that they paid their taxes. What taxes? They got back everything they paid in plus some. *sheesh* Then they gripe that their $300 stimulus check wasn't $600.

Yes, someone who makes less, pays less in taxes but they should pay. Why should they not have to pay, what would be the cut off on who should pay, why would someone want to better themselves if they only had to pay taxes if they made more?

Predatorprey
Yes low income people should pay taxes, why not?

They pay less but everyone has to pay their share

My husband makes way more than me and they take a lot from both of us so-I think they will take as much as they can from everyone they can. Newsflash the govt. does'nt care if your rich or poor they just want your money.

Depends on how low. Under today's US system, people with very low incomes don't pay federal income taxes, and people with low to even low-middle income might pay no taxes and even get something extra given to them by the tax system especially if they have a couple kids.

They do pay in for social security and medicare, at 7.65% of their income - that's a lot to somebody making a very low income.

For people legitimately getting these tax breaks, my opinion is that it's fair, even though I pay a lot of taxes. Someone with a very low income really doesn't have any extra money.

But for the many people trying to cheat the system through the large amount of tax fraud that exists, I hope they all get caught and punished. And tax fraud is HUGE - tons of under the table employment, and far from all by illegals; and tons of fraud with EIC and with claiming kids the person isn't entitled to. OK, end of rant.

Why not? They benefit from taxes also. Many low income dont pay any taxes and get more back. If you are low income and have a couple kids, you get all kinds of credits and some are refundable. You get all your money back and an extra couple thousand. Does this sound fair?

Sure. They send their kids to school, they drive on the public roads, they get protected by the military, they enjoy the freedoms given to them by the Constitution ... they should pay their fair share of the costs of all those things.
