Do you think that the income tax rate should gradually reduce for older people?
I'm thinking of a 25% discount between 60 to 70, then 50% discount for over 70 etc.

Is encouraging older people to continue working this way good, if they want to work?

As an OAP, I would love this! Don't forget, however, that most people over 65 get a much higher personal tax allowance already, and it is even higher for the over 75s. That is conditional on amount of income. Would your proposal have high income limitations, or would a millionaire get this also?
I used to deal a lot with PAYE on pensions, and there are a lot of pensioners out there that are quite well off, believe it or not. It is true that there are more with income not high enough to pay tax. Should we be trying for more parity?

F B
yes, but no chance of it happening

No.

As it is, if you're over 65, you get a second deduction.

If they have the income, they get to pay.

They already get the higher standard deduction and are taxed at a max of 85% on any SSA benefits they get. If they own their own homes, chances are the property taxes are frozen and they got a homestead exemption...which is pretty good since they have their house paid off as well.

If their income is less than $10750, they owe no tax and none of the SSA benefits are taxed. That sounds to me that they are already getting your proposed 50% discount.

quizzard123
No, what would be your inspiration for such a move? They already (in many countries) get additional age exemptions or deductions, and since income tax is based on INCOME, it follows that in order to pay tax, they must have an income. Those with lower incomes, who conceivably could USE the discount, will not benefit.

Also, why would encouraging them to work be a good thing? They need to move aside and let younger people take over. I've got no problem with a senior working if that suits them, but see no reason to encourage more doing so, especially at the expense of the rest of us.

All told, this is a pointless exercise with no benefit and substantial costs.

I figure when you get to that age you have paid your full share of the national kitty, lets have some relief.

certaxrugby
no. We're already paying for their healthcare, pensions, and so on.

James M
Yes, I think so! I get so angry when I see answers which say that we are paying for them. Most older people have worked from the age of about 15. Many of today's young people study until they have grey hair! They have no intention of working. Older people have paid a fortune into the system and they should benefit from it. In other European countries, they are treated far better than in the UK. My mother is 80 and she pays tax on one of her pensions just because she has a small amount of savings in the bank. It really angers me when I see the amount of benefits being paid to so many people, many of them foreigners who have never contributed.
