Ben Bee | Do you think the UK economy could collapse like a house of cards next year? |
I hate to be pessimistic, but I'm beginning to wonder just how bad a slump we are facing before the economy begins to recover. Already, two or three major retailers have folded and banks have had difficulties, the future doesn't look too rosy at the moment, that's for certain. |

No, I do not think that the UK economy will collapse like a house of cards next year;. Although we can never be 100% sure, the chances of such a thing happening are pretty remote. In actual fact, in accordance with the most recent projections of the Bank of England, the chances are that the economy will start to grow again by the 3rd or 4th quarter of 2009. |

2009 should be the year where the economy starts to recover. The government had nationalised and take majority stake in banks. It had cut interest rates to 2% the low in history to help in the mortgage problem and help the economy to achieve growth. To help banks to lend again to each other and to provide cheaper loans to small and medium enterprises for growth and employments for people. As for the property market, it should start picking up when house price drop to 30% of its peak price at the summer of 2007. And Barclays boss had said that his bank will start mortgage lending when house price reach that point. So UK economy will not be as bleak as some put it out to be. |

Think it has already! I know of no-one who is self-employed or has a small Business making any money, and small shops are closing all around, and even in reasonable areas homes are getting repossesed and boarded up. |

its really hard to say. I wouldn't think it would collapse completely. But prob see a lot more companies going down or being eaten by large overseas businesses. |

It could and it would have it joined the Euro!
Look at the US dollar exchange rates compared to the Euro over the last year, and it had 300% drop I don't think the pound could have taken it! |

Talking from my bunker, I feel you may be correct.Personally, I don't think we've seen anything yet and I fear the sh@t is really going to hit the fan in the coming months.Get over Yule, have a great time, and then batten down the hatches ,get extra supplies of rum, and lock up for the summer. |

For as educated a guess as any, I think Robert Peston's BLOG is a good place to start. He appears to be the one person who has a bit of an idea of what's going on, and what we can expect in the foreseeable future.. |
