I am an IT consultant. Last year I had the opportunity to work on a local government project where I was exposed to all county and district council services. There are more than 600 council services provided. I always thought that they are doing nothing but collecting rubbish only. After having seen all these services they provide, well some one has to pay for it even though as citizens we may not be using all these services.
When I was particularly working on their call centre applications I could not believe what nonsense stuff these people had to deal with. I could not believe my council tax was being used to resolve ridiculous issues the public bring to the council.
In principle I agree that we are paying too much council tax and I am also fed up. On the other hand, what they have to deal with is also a lot.
Almost all councils went trough business process streamlining to cut costs in the course of providing services while maintaining or increasing customer services. However, I have to say they have cut costs but did not increase customer services as initially they set out to do. In some areas some improvements were made. In other they did for the sake of doing it because they were told so.
If you want to know what services the councils are providing check out your local council's website. Left and right hand menus will show you all. |

"we dont do duvets"...

Yes. Part of it goes to paying for Police pensions when I cant afford a pension of my own, Is it right we have to pay for other peoples pensions, then have to pay for our own on top, where is the sense in that ? We should all be responsible for paying into our own pensions and not rely on council tax payers to do it for them !!! |

As a single person living on my own in a house I am buying with a mortgage.
All I get is a few bin bags a year and the trash picked up once a week.
Not much of a return on my outlay.
I do not know as yet whether my local council has plans to charge me yet more tax just to pick up the trash. |

I definately agree with you mate, if it aint bad enough that they take 21% of our wages then they go and charge us extra just to lie in a house! I pay mine yearly, and last month when I paid it... they took it twice! That was to weeks ago and I still have not got the money back!
End the council tax!!! |

I think that we pay far too much taxes in this country, however I must say that I can see in some instances where it has been applied.
However I think that we should not have to pay council tax at the rates which we are currently doing. There must be a better , fairer method of costing the services that they provide and only those who use should be charged.
I do not think that I should be paying some one else's bill.
What I am against is the fact is keeps increasing each year but the services or benefits are not! |

Good Question.......The trouble is, us Brits never have stuck together and stood up against anything....When Maggie Thatcher introduced the pol tax it took months for people to realise they were being ripped off, and very slowly they started to unite.....That put paid to her.......Its about time we had more demonstrations to view our objections.........But soft old Brits never do....That's why we get walked over on lots of things.......including emigration.......... |

We're 2 in a flat with a 25% discount, still have to pay about £70 a month. The services we can have? Well, garbage removed sometimes (it tends to pile up.....) we pay for the police, church (what's if we are agnostic? or ateist?).....
so that's £840 a year...
I used to live in France and paid about £250 a year. Part of the money was used for public transport (fairly good) and hot and healthy meals delivered in schools.....So yes I really wonder where the money goes.... |
