Do you try to pay as little tax as possible?

Of course - why should Gordon get to gamble with my money?

Gordon has tried to deflect the question in recent years by talking about people paying their 'fair' share of tax, which is the biggest load of baloney I have ever heard. 'Fair' is highly subjective and therefore meaningless in the context of tax.

It is important that we pay the correct amount of tax due - and not a penny more. But fairness has nothing to do with it.

My view is that we already pay far too much in tax - over 62% once you take into account indirect taxes and over 80% on some calculations. It is therefore only right that you structure your affairs to make sure you only pay the minimum legally due amount. (Of course helped by the fact that the Treasury and the Chancellor have no clue about how the tax system works and so write very poor tax laws).

You'd be stupid to answer NO to this question and say YES you try to pay as much as possible.

Paying little tax means I am probably not earning. Paying tax means I am earning a living. Paying lots of tax means I am rich. Which would you prefer ?

Erm, well, I've never tried tax evasion if that's what you're implying.

Of course I pay as little as I can *legally* pay.

If there is a legal way to reduce my tax bill and it does not take a lot of my time and effort to implement then, yes, I may well arrange my affairs to benefit.

For example, I will probably pay £3,600 into a stakeholder pension in the new year. I don't particularly want to save in this way but the investment is made so attractive by the fact that the government will refund me 98% of the cost.So it will actually cost me £72.

In a couple of years time I will be able to claim the pension and it will probably pay out something like that amount every year.

Is this the sort of thing you meant?

ANF
Certainly do but if you are an honest person you will always pay more than the dishonest. Hopefully the dishonest sometimes get caught. I try to pay as little as possible by putting savings into ISA schemes but as I am not working now the tax man takes from my pension.

Erm.....yes. Is this a trick question?
