. . . to avoid any hassle with the taxman, just smear a little peanut butter across the form - the inspector will either sniff it and lick it - or more likely, throw it in the garbage! . . .

I know quite a lot about tax forms, but yet have a lot to learn. I am a junior in college studying accounting, so I had better know them.

Actually, most are really pretty easy. Follow them line by line.Start reading the book and instructions at the very beginning.
Do everything from the very first ABC123. Call the 800 numbers, do not worry, keep them on the phone as long as you need too that is what they are there for. The people are always willing to help.
It does get easier every yr. Most income tax is easy to do your self. I have always done my own. I would not hesitate to use a paid preparer if I felt it was totally over my head. Example if I had a lot of "business" income rentals and such like that. But any standard W-2 and 1099 and interest income should be easy enough with the forms and a call.

Yes, they're pretty self-explanatory. If you have problems paying your taxes, then you should go to irs.gov and click on free file for online services that will help you to figure out what you need to be doing. :)

But. Like Elizabeth says. After struggling for a few years, you learn. The federal forms are the same for everybody. That's good. BUT. The state forms are different in every state. That's bad! I once tried to help a friend from another state. I went on the Internet looking for forms. His state had so many forms I didn't know where to start!

Unfortunately, I understand all of the tax forms because that's my job. That said, I think that the US Tax Code is insanely confusing. Just look at the instructions for these forms where the IRS estimates how long it will take you to complete them. It's just ridiculous!
Thank heaven for Turbo Tax, Tax Cut, etc. They can really help you get through a tax return without too much pain. If you really feel uncomfortable with the whole process, I'd strongly recommend having a professional do your return. A true professional tax preparer can answer any questions you have about your tax situation.

Unfortunately, the more you use them the easier they get. The instructions to the IRS forms are usually pretty helpful and can be found on www.irs.gov
