Do you understand the W-4 form well? Well help me understand how mine should be filled out. Please read detail
Well, here is my situation. I am not married yet, but living with my g'f and our dog, Charlie.
We divide the bills, and we have no children. I do not pay child support or get food stamps or social security or any types of support.
I get confused about questions like the head of household question.. here are the questions..

Enter “1” for yourself if no one else can claim you as a dependent

Enter “1” if: You are single and have only one job; or You are married, have only one job, and your spouse does not work; or your wages from a second job or your spouse’s wages (or the total of both) are $1,000 or less.

Enter number of dependents (other than your spouse or yourself) you will claim on your tax return

Enter “1” if you will file as head of household on your tax return

I just always claim 1 or 0. If you claim 0, you get more taxes taken out that way, so you'll get a bigger return back. If you're a binge spender, this is a nice arrangement, because it's like you've been putting money into an account all year long and you get it back at tax time. If you're more fiscally responsible, just claim 1. You'll get about the right amount of taxes taken out. So, your paychecks will be slightly larger, but you won't get as much, if any, back at the end of the year. It just depends on whether you'd like your bank or Uncle Sam to hold on to your money for you until tax time. Don't worry about the instructions on the back. You don't have to follow them. They're just suggestions.

You filing status for federal taxes is Single and 1. You cannot claim head of household for a non-relative even if you pay more than half their support. The feds took that option away.

As for your W-4, the only thing that controls is the amount of money being withheld from your paycheck. The highest withholding is for those that file their W-4 Single and Zero. Married and 9 means the lowest.

So, ask yourself, do you want to pay in at the end of the year or get money back. Realize the IRS does not pay interest on the money they keep.

When I was single, I always filed my W-4 Single and zero, as single taxpayers pay the highest percentage of taxes and I hate having to send the IRS money.

1 and done for now

if you are single you want to claim 0 to get the most back at the end of the year. You gf should do the same. If you claim 1 (yourself) they will take less taxes out of your checks, but you wont get squat back for a return....so its really up to you.

Enter 1 that is all you need to do..
if this is the W4 also put 0 for dependents.
That way they government will owe you when you do your taxes.

You are NOT Head of Household. Period! To file as HoH you must be maintaing a home for a child or other closely related person such as an elderly parent or disabled sibling.

You may claim 1 for yourself and 1 since you only have one job for a maximum of 2 allowances. Most folks would claim 1 to be safe.

Your g/f and dog don't figure into the sitaution at all.

Count one for yourself, and 1 more if you have only one job. You don't have any dependents, and you don't qualify for head of household status, so single/2 allowances is what you should claim to come out pretty close to even at the end of the year.

Head of household is reserved for people who are providing the cost of keeping up a home for a dependent like a child or a parent. Your filing status will be single, not head of household.
