Do you want to pay more tax because of the smoking ban, £257,920,000 ?
170,000 people have stopped smoking since the ban.
If they smoked 20 cigs a day, that would meen a loss of £4 tax
lost,4 times 170.000 =£ 680;000 tax lost per day.
7 times £ 6,800,000 = £ 4,960,000 tax lost per week.
in 52 weeks we have 52 times £4,960,000 = £257,920,000.
plus 26 pubs closing each week and other businesses
closed.Who is going to make up for the short fall in tax revinue
The government anounced yesterday an 8 billion pound short fall, so how mutch is this figure down to The Smoking Ban ?
Additional Details
8 billion meens a rise of
2 pence in the pound in Tax.

How much is due to the smoking ban? Well, using your figures about 3%.

Your question assumes that the £8bn shortfall is solely down to lost revenue. The reality is that the majority of the shortfall is due to a failure to balance the amount spent with the amount of income, i.e. the tax take is increasing despite the smoking ban, but not as fast as the government spends it.

That said, suggestions that the tax shortfall is offset by smokers' lower demand on NHS services are equally misleading. I haven't seen Gordon Brown reducing the NHS budget in compensation, have you?

smoking paid the NHS their money now people are giving up smoking then something which you need will go up in tax and it will be something you really need in life so you will have no choice but to pay.

Abdul
the money will be made up from future NHS bills.

Even if a significant % of the £8 billion shortfall in taxes is due to a loss of revenue as a result of reduced cigarette/tobacco sales it is still most definitely well worth paying more tax to save lives & improve the health of many thousands.

No way, keep on smoking..please, i pay enough taxes as it is!

Luvfactory
No doubt, they will bring out a new tax to compensate for the loss of revenue. These w-nkers are hell bent on attacking smokers, anyway. I welcome the idea that now some other people get taxed so that they get a bit of a knock on effect from the dreaded smokers. There will be one day when all these people attacking smokers now will wish that those unselfish smokers were smoking again. I would have packed it in ages ago but I am a good, patriotic citizen who just wants to do my heroic duty of relieving other from another tax.

This was my point when they were talking about the smoking ban.
I am a smoker and will comply with our dictatorial state that we now find ourselves in. As smokers we pay extortionate tax, but as an adult, this is my decision. So now with the 100's of thousands of pounds in lost revenue for this govt everyone will carry the burden. Another stealth tax...When's it going to stop? We are being treated like idiots in the highest order and people need to wake up and smell the coffee so to speak.

Great. Nice research. Way to spread even more propaganda than there is at the moment.

You've failed to recognise that tax on other items has risen in the meantime (by the way, that's how "mean" is spelt) and that this will force the Government to raise the finance that way.

I don't doubt that the smoking ban will probably cost us more in the short-term (and of course, taxes are hardly likely to ever come down, so possibly the long-term) but you haven't even considered the money saved in the NHS by the slowing down of treatment of smokers with cirrhosis, lung cancer, throat cancer etc. in the next few years.

The simple fact is, we are going to pay more and more tax ANYWAY. Get over it.

stevexnelson
Yes. I'm happy to pay more taxes. I think your statistics are misleading to say the least.

Keep in mind, that your statistics do not include all of the savings to the health care system because all of these people quit smoking. Not to mention, many people are no longer exposed to second hand smoke.

The smoking ban should have been implemented years ago.

Good question.
