Look at your tax code on your pay slip if it says 522L it is correct. That means you can earn £5220 per year(about £100 per week) before getting taxed anything over that amount you pay tax on. Age is irrelevant. |

Everyone in the UK is liable to income tax if they have sufficient income, regardless of age. Your tax free allowance is approximately £5000 per year. This boy is earning nearly £9000 per year, so yes he is liable to pay tax. |

Everyone over the age of 16 and earning more than the tax threshold pays tax.
You ask if this is right. You bet your boots it is. HMRC don't take the tax for the good of their health, the Chancellor doesn't take it just to be mean. You and I need to be taxed to pay for our public services. The very same people who come on here whinging about paying tax are the very same ones who come here saying they want to collect a state pension at 50 and want ever higher numbers of doctors, nurses, teachers, policemen etc. I don't know how they propose to pay for it. Maybe shirt buttons? |

You are allowed to earn an allowance each year that is tax free. You should get your son to phone up the inland revenue helpline or go online they will be happy to help. They will explain everything to him. |

Sounds about right. Everyone has to pay tax. The first £100 [-odd] per week is tax free. The next small bit is 10% and the rest at 22%.
Pays for all the services in Britain which he has used, uses and will use. |

* £5.35 per hour for 22-year-olds and above
* £4.45 per hour for 18-to-21-year-olds
* £3.30 per hour for under-18s who have finished compulsory education
* None for those who have not yet finished compulsory education (the age when a person finishes compulsory education is either 15 or 16, depending on where their birthday falls in the school year)
The adult rate has risen since 1999 from the initial £3.60 an hour. A £4.15 a day deduction can be made for living accommodation. No extra benefits such as redundancy, pension payments, loans, or awards can be included as pay. An exception is that if tips are distributed through the payroll system, then the employer can calculate that as part of the minimum wage.
The policy is criticized for having a separate tier of payment for 18-21 year olds, who are expected to pay tax, or pay £3000 per year for university, and pay National Insurance, yet can still be paid 90p per hour less than other adults(this applies to the UK only) |

Income tax is not rated according to age...only earnings.
On this rate of earnings he will be paying approximately 10% tax on the first £2000 earnt in the tax year and 22% on the remainder. This is of course after any tax free alloowance he might have. |
