Does a person working and living abroad have to pay council tax?

Additional Details
My daughter has been living abroad and now the council have sent a bill for me to pay the back tax since she has lived abroad,I am the owner and claimed single person occupancy for past two years. She had a very low income and did not pay anything towards the house and only returned for short holidays.

council tax is based on the idea of sole or main residence in the UK - if your daughter uses/would use your property as the residence she would return to then it is her sole or main residence within the UK and therefore as far as council tax is concerned she is resident . Providing there are other residents who are not disregarded a full charge is due.

If he has a house in the UK then yes

Yes indeed, once you are registered with your local council (if you vote then I am sure you are) you are liable for the tax on this property regardless of your circumstances. Having said that though it does not hurt to talk to your local council department as you sometimes find someone with a sympathetic ear. Good luck

Only if they have a house - that's what council tax is based on. You should see the tax bill for the Beauville-Lobe estate.

no. council tax is only paid by people living in the county to which the tax is paid.

you will need to notify them of your change of address.

if you have a house or property in the council which is empty, there is no council tax to pay.

if it's empty for 6 months or more but you will be returning, then there's a reduced rate.

If you have a house in UK then Yes, but at a reduced rate, check with your local council.

If you own a property and it is furnished but unoccupied you will have to pay a discounted rate of council tax. However if the property is occupied then it is your responsibility to provide the tennants details to your local authority.
