lexilou | Does an unborn child count as a dependent when filing taxes? |
I am having a baby in June 09, does the baby count as a dependent while in the womb? It may be a silly question but this is my first baby, and I'm hoping she does because we could really use the extra money to get started out... |

No, you have to have a live birth before 11:59 pm on December 31st for you to be able to file for the child. It's not a silly question, you weren't born with this knowledge!
Just wait till next year when you can file for her! It's SO nice and makes a big difference in the refund you get! |

It is not a dependent until it starts to breathe on its own. |

no unfortunately she doesn't. |

No, she doesn't count as a dependent until she's born. So if she's born in June 09 the first year you can claim her is next year when you do your 2009 taxes. |

I had the same question when my first son was on the way. Unfortunately, you can't claim the little guy/gal until he's actually been born. If he was born on December 31st, you'd still be able to claim him for the entire year.. But until he emerges from the womb he "doesn't count". :-) |
|

Chuck M
|
Nope.
If you have a child born December 31 you can claim him/her for the whole year but you can't claim them until next year. |
|

sorry, but no. you have to wait until next year to be able to claim the baby on your taxes. |

The baby will count as a dependent in the year he or she is born. If born on Dec 31, 2009, you will have a dependent tax deduction for 2009.
And you will need to get social security number to claim the child on your taxes. |

Duh. No way. LOL - how daft that would be. |

Absolutely not! |

|
No - but she will next year.
However - just between you and me - just write her down as a dependent child. Who's going to check?
And if they do check just say you were mistaken.
Remember Richard Nixon - He lied all the time but came up with the phrase "Plausible Deniability".
Lie your head off - but just have a good story - it's the republican way. |
