I don't know where all these fairy stories get dreamed up from!
In the UK, there are no longer any tax allowances for dependants unless you were born before 05/04/1935, when you can still claim marriage allowance.
For this tax yea, which ends on 05/04/2008, you can earn £5225 before tax, from 6th April it is £5435.
This year, 2007/2008, after the tax-free allowance, you pay 10% in the first £2230, 22% on the next £32370, and 40% on anything over.
In 2008/2009, you will pay 20% on the first taxable £36000, and 40% over that. The % of tax you pay varies according to your level of earnings.
If you want to work it all out for any year, look at www.listentotaxman. |

depends on how many hours you work and what your tax code is. |

Depends if you have a tax code, the standard code at the moment is 522L which means you have £5220 tax free pay. If you earn under this you don't pay tax, if you do then you are taxed on the remainder. If you are on basic rate, tax is 22%. However if this is your main income then I would suggest you contact your payroll department and get hold of a P46 as this will reduce the tax you pay. |

It is 17.5%. Though it can vary eg if you have earned less than £3k in the tax year, if you are on emeregency tax (ie if started a new job without a P45 from previous employer). |

It is 11% if you have a tax code
22% at basic rate if you have no tax code
It also depends on how much you earn. You get an allowance of about £5,000 tax free before you have to start paying tax on income.
Don't forget you also have to pay National Insurance Contributions! |

This depends on your tax code. You may not have to pay anything if you have dependents. You could also claim other benefits to make your wage up. Google benefits for a low wage earner. |

Ok this is the actual answer:
If you work 7 hours a day at the current minimum wage (From April 2008) at £5.52. Over five days a week and fifty two weeks a year, you would get £10,046.40 gross.
Net Deductions are as follows: (2008/09 rates)
Tax free - £5435
£4611.40 is taxable at 20%
£922.28 is the tax due
£504.50 are your NI contributions at earnings over £105 per week
Total Deductions: £1426.78
NET Earnings: £8619.62
Monthly £718.30
Weekly £165.76 |

Thinks it 22% but you can check on the government website. |
