Does anybody knows anything about the IRS being a private corporation?

The IRS is a part of the Treasury Department and therefore part of the US government. There are two things which might have confused you recently in the news. First, the US has contracted with private contractors to collect back taxes, penalties, and interest. The other thing was that there was talk of privatizing the IRS similar to what's being done with NASA, USPS, and some other agencies. Hopefully, that isn't going to happen - the IRS needs to be accountable to the taxpayers.

The IRS is not a private entity, but you may have heard that the IRS has recently begun using private debt collection agencies to collect back taxes.

This sounds like one of those nutty tax protestor ideas, a conclusion that is bolstered by the email sent to me separately after my original posting.

You can't be serious. Check out www.irs.gov

They are not private. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS), used to run like a private corporations and have their own rules and regulations, but as they were being sought out of some activities of wrong doing. The were found to being taking folks personal properties and more if they owed any type of taxes, it was more like extortion. As the government looked more closely into the IRS's activities, they found some to be illegal and fixed a lot of the problems. This was more in the 1920's to the 1960's. You should check out the history of our nation...you would be surprised of some departments.

Yes...the IRS is actually a conglomerate formed by Andrew Carnegie, Joseph Kennedy, Andrew Mellon and many other multi-millionaires during the 20's. It has since passed on to Gates and a few Saudi Sheiks. And just so you know, we never landed on the moon, Elvis is still alive flipping burgers in Akron, OH, aliens have landed and are living among us.

Oh Boy!
It's not.

This is a very common untruth popular among tax protestors and other sociopaths -- along with nonsense like "dollar bills aren't really money", "wages are not income", and -- I swear I'm not making it up -- "Ohio isn't really a State".

The IRS is not a private corporation! Congress makes laws and the IRS is the governing body that enforces that law.
PS: Don't agree with a tax law? Write your congressman! The IRS are ONLY enforcers of the law!
