Does anyone claim Child&working tax credit when self employed selling on Ebay?
Hello

I work part time (self employed) 16 hours p/w I`m on low income on approx £200 p/m , I have 2 small children

I really would like to start working from home opening my shop online (ebay) but not sure wheter or not selling on Ebay could be classified as working like self employed ?
I heard that if you are on a very low income they doubt you are working over 16hours p/w ?

I`m already registered with Inland Revenue as a self employed so would I have phone them again only to tell them I`ve changed my business ?

What about Child & working child credits , would I have to let them know that I`ve started working from home( working hours & income would change much)

I know they could ask some proof of earnings , what would I have to shown them ? Dont have payslips as obviously I`m self employed , need to show them books ? Bank statements ?

Hi,
If you are registered as self-employed and doing 16 hours of work (and earn below the threshold) then you can claim working tax credits. Selling on ebay is a perfectly acceptable business.
Give them an estimated figure for income, remember to take into account your business expenses such as internet, postage and packaging, small amount for light & heat, working from home, motor expenses (for going to the post office, picking up goods) etc....before you give them your actual income figure you need to take these off any earnings.
For tax credits they don't normally ask for proof of earnings if you are self-employed, they just ask for the figure that you have given the revenue.
Also, bear in mind that you could be working 16 hours and not earning enough for 16 hours at the beginning...for example, you could be spending 5 hours out of 16 simply researching the market for your company.
I hope this helps.

If you're only making £200 pm, you would be better off ditching the part time work, registering unemployed and claiming JSA (Job Seeker Allowance). The basic rate for JSA is £130 per fortnight and you would probably get more if you have children.
Quite honestly, although working may make you feel proud, it is doing you no favors because of your very low income derived from that work
