Jessica H | Does anyone else think it is retarded that tips count as taxable income??? |

I personally think it's outrageous. It's kind of a punishment if you think about it.
Many people working service industry jobs depend on tips to supplement their already low income.
Ideally tips should only be given when the server earns it.
Tips have become almost mandatory when eating out. Over the years people have been made to feel guilty for not tipping, even if the service was bad.
I'm a really good tipper if my server earns it (which doesn't take much effort). But if I get a really bad server, whether it be because they never checked on me, refilled my coffee, or was just plain rude they're not getting anything extra.
But back to taxes. Taxing hard workers' tips who genuinely earn them by being diligent, polite, and attentive is a roundabout way of punishing productivity. It's kind of like taxing the rich, although the arguments are completely different in that arena.
There's a good chapter about tipping in Glenn Beck's new book.
As far as the politics of taxing tips, Ron Paul is the only 2008 candidate who seems to care about the issue. He even has section of his website devoted to the problem.

Hope this helps! |

No. The rest of us are taxed on all of our income, so why would there be an exception for you? |

No, why would it be retarded?? I have a friend who pulls in nearly $100k a year in tips -- enough that she has to turn a chunk over to her employer cover the withholding from her pay. Why should she get a bye on income tax just because it's tips?
You're being paid to do a job. The income you receive from it is taxable, pure and simple. If you don't like reporting tips and paying the taxes on them, get a job that doesn't include tips.
IMHO what is retarded is that some people think that their income should receive special treatment just because of they way that they earned it. I'm OK with the combat exclusion for military folks serving in a war zone -- been there, done that, got the medals -- but everyone else can step up and pay their fair share. |

It wasn't a gift, it was "To Insure Prompt Service."
Just make sure your employer is letting you report your tips (less tipouts) correctly. |

No. It's income. |

Actually, I think it's retarded to have to tip. I think food service operations should pay a liveable wage to their food servers and no tips allowed. If you get bad service, complain to the manager.
I'm still trying to figure out how anyone could think tips wouldn't be considered "income". |

Why shouldn't tips be taxed? Do you think that you are special and don't have to pay taxes on money you earned? They tax the rest of us, so welcome to the club. |

Yea it is retarded INCOME TAX IS RETARDED !!! what they wont tell you is where all our income tax is really going to.
January 15, 1984. Available from the Congressional Research Service.
The excerpt below can be found on page 12.
"Importantly, any meaningful increases in taxes from personal income would have to come from lower and middle income families, as 90% of all personal taxable income is generated below the taxable income level of $35,000.
Further, there isn't much more that can be extracted from high income brackets. If the
Government took 100% of all taxable income beyond the $75,000 tax bracket not already taxed, it would get only $17 billion, and this confiscation, which would destroy productive enterprise, would only be sufficient to run the Government for several days.
Resistance to additional income taxes would be even more widespread if people were aware that:
With two-thirds of everyone's personal income taxes wasted or not collected, 100% of what is collected is absorbed solely by interest on the Federal Government contributions to transfer payments.
In other words, all individual income tax revenues are gone before one nickel is spent on the services which taxpayers expect from their government."
