Next year find someone locally who will do it for you, I've been doing my own taxes my entire life and they are easy. Look in your local malls and grocery store for those message boards within the community you can usually find someone that way. They charge anywhere from fifty to a hundred to do them for you and sometimes more. |

Without knowing anything about the complexity of your tax situation there's no way to say if that was high, low, or just about right. That price would generally indicate that your tax situation was more complicated than simple wages from a single job. Tack on itemized deductions, some dividend and interest income and some capital gains or a rental property or self-employment income you could easily hit $400 or a whole lot more. |

Block is a ripoff. They wanted nearly $200 to do a simple 1040 form for me, with a standard deduction, and no oddities--they did not know which form was my W-2, they missed several items that would have cost me over $300 in refund---and they hounded me for payment after I walked out and told them no. Also, the agent was late to my appointment, and came in EATING SNACKS, which he dribbled all over the desk. Totally unprofessional.
I wouldn't do business with them EVER. |

Total ripoff. 95% of people can do their own taxes if they were only willing to just sit down and read the damn instructions for the forms. Even TurboTax Deluxe only costs about $60. |

I've always done my own.
It's free that way. |

That's ridiculous. Plus, in my experience H & R makes mistakes, as well. And if you get in trouble, they won't go to court with you like an accountant will. How complicated are your taxes? Try doing them on line or go to your State Building. They have people prepare taxes for free. |

I think that is B.S. Unless there is a business. |

H&R Block and, Jackson and Hewitt and the rest of the "gang" base the fees on two major things. The first being the time of the year that you file. They have what they call a peak season from Jan 5 to To around March 1. They also charge per w-2 and for each form they fill out.
Bank Charges for the "loans" are set by the bank |

Holy Cow!! I just have the basics done and I pay $125.00 every year. What sucks about the whole thing is I only get back about $300.00 so just to have them prepared is about 1/2 of what Im getting back! I think they over charge and last year I found an error. They fixed it but didn't give me discount or anything...Turbo Tax here I come! |

Wow, that's rediculous! You should do your taxes for free online. Turbotax is great for that. |

Yes they do, and they don't use the internet unless you request it--at least our local branch doesn't--they charge more for internet filing. Find another preparer! |

It depends on what your return involved. If you are not an expert, I would not do the return yourself. Hire a good tax pro. I have looked at so many return where it was incorrectly by the individual or even H&R block. |

Yes, and they're useless. I only went to them one year, and they got me HALF of what I normally get and charged me more than they said they would. Truth being, doing it online is pretty easy and you can claim all you max amounts without receipts - H&R dont do that for you. |

I worked for H&R Block years ago when I was in college. There is a lot of behind-the-scenes work and workers you never see that have to do things with every tax return filed. For the amount of manpower that goes into it, I would have to say no, they do not overcharge. |
