Does anyone know about claiming back the Tax when you don't work?

I phoned Inland Revenue a few days ago to find out about exactly this. If you have been working for part of the year, then become unemployed you may be eligible for a rebate. However they won't process any claims for repayment until the end of the tax year (April). So wait a few months, then give Inland revenue a call with your National Insurance number.
Good luck...

you need to speak to the social security office or if you wanted an accountant

There are two ways you can get your tax back if you believe you have paid too much........

1. Option one - get another job and take your P45 you should have had from your previous employer. If you have paid too much tax you will get a tax rebate as part of your salary.

2. Option two - Wait until the end of the tax year 5 April '06 and send your P60 off to the tax office together with a covering letter stating that you believe you have paid too much tax.

If you are a seasonal worker and only work for part of the year fill out a form P38. Give this to any prospective new employer and they will use an NT tax code. NO TAX ! But if you earn too much you will be liable for any difference.

Good luck

but watch out because if you sign on at the dole you have to give away your p45 and then it becomes very difficult indeed when they are involved its total crap as its your money or is it Gordon browns twat!

I think you can only do this if you have worked part of the year and then stop work. The tax year starts on April 4th for example 2006, you work and pay tax from then until say November 1st. when you stop working. You will have been given a form marked P45 (from your ex-employer) This states the total wages you have earned, the total tax you have paid and your tax code, if you have lost this you can ask the inland revenue for a duplicate, keep this somewhere safe. You then ask the Inland revenue for a form to re-claim tax paid. complete this form, using the information on your P45, and send it or take it to your local tax office. You should then be able to have refunded all or part of the tax you have paid for the year.

I took early retirement this year and made enquiries and there is a form you can fill in at the end of the tax year to claim your tax allowance back from the tax you pay on your savings.I forget the number of the form but I think you can find out on line or your building society or bank may be able to point you in the right direction.

no but i'd like to find out too

i didn't know about this, but very interesting concept. sounds like another of the many, rules and regulations that unless you are up on, tax department does not volunteer.
