Does anyone know what happens to people who don't file their taxes for so many years? Not me, just curious
Let's say, they work and they get taxes taken out of their paychecks and child support, etc.. What actually happens, if anything, if they haven't filed their taxes for years?

typically if you have an adjusted goss income of less than &7,000, you dont have to file

if you are owed a refund you dont have to file, BUT...if you dont file those returns in 3 years, you lose the refund-goose egg for you

if you owe money and don file, penalties and interest and then when you do file, the statute of limitations is 10 years for the govt to collect them from you either by garnishing your wages or placing liens on your property or in extreme cases-seizing your property and selling it at auction to pay your taxes

few people go to jail for not filing or not paying money owed, but people who file false returns on purpose to purposely defraud the govt-thats a bad situation

The IRS will eventually catch up with them and they could go to jail if the owe a lot of money... just because u have taxes taken out of ur check doesn't mean u won't have to pay anything in....

Actually if you were going to get a refund, the gov't doesn't mind and you can file them anytime and get the refunds. If you owed taxes for those years, then you will have to pay penalties and fines--when it is discovered. A guy I know never files his taxes, but when he needs money he files the back tax returns.

A lot depends on whether you owe taxes or are due a refund.

If you owe taxes, they will eventually catch up with you. Then, you will have to pay the taxes, interest, and penalties.

If you are owed refunds, you can only claim for the past 3 years. Refunds you may have been entitled to before that are lost.

It's very rare that you will go to jail. You just have to get the tax returns filed and make arrangements to pay the taxes you owe and the interest on the taxes. Sometimes you can get them to drop the penalties. Of course, your tax returns may prove that you owe no taxes in one or more years. As long as a judgment for back taxes hasn't been levied against you, your tax return will "correct" the record.

As with any unpaid debt, if you don't pay your taxes, the taxing authority can attach your bank accounts and place liens against any property you own.

If you can't afford to pay your taxes because ur poor you go to jail

If you don't pay ur taxes because ur rich and greedy you get an extension and pay only a percentage of your debt when caught
