Can I just point out that the Emergency Tax isn't the bad thing that everyone thinks it is!
At the moment, the emergency tax code is the same as the single persons tax code, which is the one that most people would be on anyway!
Even if he is put on the emergency tax code, its what he would be paying anyway, unless he has a special tax code for receiving tax credits etc |

no if you don't have a p45 he must pay emergency tax till they sort it out |

Get on to the local tax office quickly. chances are he will end up on emergency tax for at least the first month but the sooner the tax office are on the case (and nagged) the better. |

well you can complete a P46 but its more than likely emergency tax will have to be paid for a couple of weeks... it depends on the company that does the payroll internal/external ect.... |

I doubt if it really makes much difference these days. As everyone says simply get on to the tax office and when it is sorted - which does not take very long - any overpayment will be refunded. |

Go to your tax office as soon as you can, and explain the situation, also fill in a P46, available from the tax office or your husbands new employer. Chances are he will be on emergency tax for a month or so, but this will be refunded through his wages, once the appropriate tax code is allocated. |

Contact your local tax office. They can provide you with the documentation you need, although it may take a few days. |

Emergency tax codes are a thing of the past.
Why people think that being on an emergency tax code is bad beats me as the allowance you are allowed is exactly the same as the normal tax code. In effect there is no such thing as an emergency tax code.
When your husband started his new job his new employer would have asked him to complete a P46. This form is used if a P45 is not available.
The tax code that your new employer will be using is 522L and may be with a W1 or M1 suffix. The suffix will apply for a short period until the new tax coding notice is sent from the Revenue to your husbands new employer.
The amount of tax charged will be the same as the normal tax charged.
If for some reason your husband should have a higher tax code then when the tax coding notice is sent to the employer the correction will be made the following pay run.
The fact the company he worked for went 'bump' does not stop the directors of that company issuing P45's, and they will still have to submit to the Revenue a cessation return before the company is struck off the companies house register.
Just to make another thing clear, because you were claiming tax credits will not affect the tax codes in any way. But you will have to inform the tax credits people on 0845 300 3900 the change of employer, and the new salary within one month of the change. |
