Carissa M | Does my newborn qualify as a dependent? |
My child was born 10/29/2008
Today I filed my taxes, and I did not qualify for a child credit. Is this because he hasn't lived with me for more than 6 months? My boyfriend seems to think I should be getting a large refund, and I think he's wrong... Please help! |

First congratulations on the new baby!
If you earned under $8500 you would not be receiving any child tax credit. You may have gotten the Earned Income Tax Credit though, but this will vary depending on your income.
The child is considered to have lived with you all year last year if he lived with you all the time he was alive.
E-mail me if you have any specifics about how your tax was figured.

A newborn is treated as living with you all year. |

It doesn't matter if your child was born on December 31st at 11:59pm... as long as he/she was born before the new year, that child qualifies as a dependent for the whole year. |

Wartz is right.... you should claim your newborn as a dependent. |

Your child was eligible for the child tax credit. However, to get the credit you have to owe tax. If you don't owe tax, you only qualified for the additional child tax credit if you made more than $8500 in earned income.
If you had a small amount of earned income, claiming your child should have gotten you some EIC.
If you find neither on your return, did you answer a question wrong on the EIC section? Newborns counts as 12 months on that form. |

Yes, the child is dependent on 2008 tax return.

A child born to you qualifies as a dependant that has been living with you all year...even if they were born on New Year's Eve at 10:30 p.m.
The only thing that I can think of as to why you do not qualify for the child credit is maybe because you earned too much?
If not...then I would make for certain the information has been added correctly.
I was able to file my 2 children and get the child credit when they moved in (an adoptive placement is viewed exactly as a child being born to you) on that year's taxes. |
