plantainofdeath | Does my refund amount decrease with an increase in my annual income? |
This year, I made about $19000 compared to the $6000 I made last year (part-time work, full-time student). I used HR Block refund estimator and it said that I would only be getting back $750. That's what I got back last year! Should I get more of a refund since I contributed way more to federal taxes? I am single and have no kids. Last year I did not claim myself (obviously) but this year I have to. Additional Details I definitely want a bigger refund, don't get me wrong! I guess I should've worded it differently. I just expected more. |

I have enclosed a calculator (See below) that estimates your tax at $1106. That is an effective tax rate of 5.82% and you are taxed on $10,050. of the $19,000. You should be able to look at how much tax you paid in and see how much you will get back. |

You'll pay out more tax if you have more income--but you're tax bracket is higher. Even though you paid more, you also OWE more.
So yes, that sounds correct--that your refund would be about the same.

No.
A refund is given because you've overpaid! Specifically, when you withheld, you withheld too much.
In other words, you have the government an interest free loan.

Contrary to popular believe, you don't get everything back that you had withheld it just works out that way if you make under a certain amount.
The higher your income, the higher your tax liability for the year. What, if anything, you get back is calculated by comparing your final liability to your withhold.
Some of us even owe every year. We plan it that way. |

Depends on your tax bracket, your withholding, your income, your exemptions. As a Single with no kids, putting money into your 401k at work will reduce your taxable income, obtain matching money from employer, and build a nest egg for your retirement. Generally you can start contributing NOW and make an impact on your tax return.
You control your withholding amount by the W-4 you file at work. |

I'm not sure you understand just what a refund is. Through the year you might have money withheld from your paycheck for federal income tax. At the end of the year, you prepare a form called a tax return to calculate how much tax you owe total for the year, and compare that to what was withheld. If you had more withheld than your total tax, you get the extra back as a refund. If you didn't have enough withheld, you have to pay the rest rather than getting a refund.
A refund isn't some sort of bonus the government gives you for working. It's like if you went to WalMart and bought $16 worth of items, but gave the cashier a $20 bill. You'd get a "refund" of $4, but it's not them giving you something, it's just getting your own money back.
If you make more, your employer will withhold more. But you'll owe more also, so any refund can go up or down. |

Not necessarily, if you make more than you also owe more in taxes. In theory by the end of the year you should have had enough deducted from your paycheck to cover your taxes for the year and shouldn't get a huge refund or owe a large amount. |

It depends on how your withholding is set up. If you worked just part of a year, for instance, you get money withheld from your check as if you were going to make the same amount all year, so at the end of the year you get a big refund. If you work overtime a lot, when you get a big check with all that overtime on it, the withholding is done as if you made that much every week, so you get a bigger refund.
You try to get withholding right on the nose so you don't owe anything but you don't get a refund either, because the govt. holds onto your money without interest. But it's better to pay too much than too little. |

Unless you are crazy, you don't WANT a tax refund when you do your taxes. Ideally, you would end up having to pay $10-15 in additional tax.
Think about it, if you get a $1000 refund, that means you just loaned the government $1000 interest-free! You could have had that money in an account earning you money!
