Does my step mom benefit financially (income taxes, social security, ect.) since she is married to my Dad?
This story is just to give you all an idea of why i am asking this question but if you don't want to read it just scroll all the way down to the question but you will be very interested in my story I promise you...
My step mom makes a lot of money and my dad makes a below average amount. I would be able to go to college for free with the financial aid that I would receive if my dad wasn't married to this monster.
My step mom makes me pay for everything. She acts like everyone should be like her because she makes 120K a year and my dad makes around 40K a year. She always tells me "look at my life compared to your dads thats why you should go to college!" Now, my dad has many friends and everyone loves my dad but he is losing all of his friends because of my step mom. She is very demanding and thinks that everything she does is the best thing in the world so when someone tries to tell her a story about what they did this weekend she'll have the balls to tell them that if they weren't poor they would be able to enjoy life like she does. She is very bland and fat and looks like peter griffin. She loves to belittle people and make them feel they are the size of a piece of rice.
I'm in college and when I come home to visit I even have to buy my own water and food. When my dad gives me a couple bucks which I don't even ask for she gets mad at him. She is always eating out and playing golf and wasting money on stupid weight watcher products and services which don't even work for her at all. She buys fancy water with bubbles in it and really throws her money wherever she wants to spend it. The other day she asked me if I could pick up a list of alcoholic drinks she wrote for me. I went to a store and bought them. When I gave her the receipt back she flipped out because I went to "the wrong liquor store" and I could have saved 5 or 10 dollars if I had gone to the one she usually goes to, and if I would have called and asked her first (which she didn't say for me to do) this problem would have never happened. Then she starts saying "I should have known better than to give you a simple task that I knew you would never be able to complete something so simple correctly. You're just never going to do anything right there is always a problem with you." She threw a tantrum and looked like such a stupid penny pincher and my dad told her to stop making such a big deal all I did was keep my mouth shut because I've learned to keep my mouth shut when a woman, like her especially, is angry because you can never win. She then randomly started shouting out "We'll see how you do in the Air Force with that attitude and respect that you have. I really don't think you're going to make it in the Air Force you never do anything right"(at this point I was laughing in my head because this whole time i haven't even said one word). Now..... I am currently going to the air force and I have some college credits so I will be going in at a level where I have more responsibility better pay and more respect. I have always worked my whole life and worked hard. I never ask for much and everyone is always telling me how responsible I am. I love life and always try to make the best of it just like my dad. I like to have fun and laugh but when I need to be serious trust me I am very dedicated and serious. Now I took some student loans out for college and obviously I have to pay them back once school is over. I've taken over 3 loans out in my life and each one I paid in half the time the loans were out so i'm very responsible about this kind of stuff. This is the worst thing i've ever heard in my life and it really hurt me and dented me inside because I don't think this is something someone should say to anyone specially when they are trying so hard and not even trying but succeeding so much.
-step mom- "You know that if you die in the air force or something happens to you where you can't pay back your loans your dad still has to pay them for you which is very irresponsible about you leaving your dad with such responsibility all because you want to go to the air force"
-me- I understand but i'm sure that if I died in the Air Force that would be the least of his worries but thanks for supporting me so much.
-step mom-I just wanted to let you know since you don't care about your consequences ever and are so irresponsible about everything that I just wanted to make sure you knew.
-ME- Actually if anything happens to me once i'm in the Air Force my dad will get a $450,000.00 check because they make sure to give everyone a life insurance policy.
-Step mom- Oh thats great okay (then walks away and goes upstairs).
Now that is really rude and shows that she does not care for me at all and is an extremely fake person. With all of that said you will all now know why I am asking this question because she acts like hav

No she does not but your dad benefits from her. He can collect a greater social security check upon retirement.

OK, if your description of her is even anywhere CLOSE to how she acts, she's a loser. She might make a good paycheck. But she's still a loser, and probably a very unhappy person. Not that I expect you to have sympathy for her being unhappy. People usually make their own happiness or unhappiness.

That said, for your question, being married might save her some money for federal income tax. It won't change her social security.

Good luck in the air force.

You describe a person that is feeling very displeased with herself. This is a good time to learn to be kind to those that nay not deserve it. Live your life with honor and be thankful that you are not as tormented as you step mother seems to be. As for you question it is very unlikely that your step mother will enjoy much financial benefit from being married to your father. You would be well advised not to worry about their circumstances as it is their doing, not yours.Learn to change the things you can change and accept those that you can not.

The amount of money that she might be saving in taxes by marrying your Dad is modest at best. On the Social Security end, your DAD will be the beneficiary there if 50% of her benefit amount is greater than 100% of his benefit amount. Additionally, if he survives her, he would receive 100% of her benefit amount if it was greater than 100% of his benefit amount.

What your dad sees in her I can't say but some people will settle just to avoid loneliness.

She's clueless on the issue of the loan repayment. If anything should happen to you, your father will NOT have to repay the loans unless he co-signed on them. Most student loans are issued in the name of the student alone, so your father is off the hook if anything happens to you. Your estate would have to pay the loans if you had sufficient assets when you died, but if you didn't, nobody else would have to pay them back.

Let this old retired Air Force First Sergeant offer you a quick piece of advice that hopefully you will never need but that may bring you some peace of mind. Early on in basic training -- day one or two -- you'll fill out paperwork for the Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance. They'll push you to write "By Law" on the beneficiary designation to speed everyone through. Don't do it! If you do and anything happens to your Dad first, Cruella Deville will get the $400,000! Work out the names of the beneficiaries in advance, and have contingency beneficiaries in mind as well. List the local animal rescue shelter if you have to, just don't let that bee-atch on wheels get anything should anything happen to you. Just be sure that your estate does NOT sit in the mix anywhere since she may be able to get her hands on some of the SGLI money if it is.

Another important form you'll fill out will be a DD Form 93, Emergency Data Card. This has two purposes. It's used to make casualty notifications if anything happens to you and to designate who gets any unpaid pay as well as the Death Benefit Gratuity should you die on active duty. List her name there if you wish, but flag her for no notification and also list her as a 0% beneficiary for the accrued pay and DBG.

The final thing that you need to do, though you may not be able to get time to do it in basic training, is be SURE to have a will! The Legal Office at any military installation will prepare one for you for free, a sorely underused benefit of military service. If you can't do it at Lackland while you're in basic, make it a priority upon arrival at your Tech School or immediately upon your arrival at your first duty station. In your will, explicitly exclude her from any inheritance. Better yet, leave her the $10 that you "wasted" on the booze.

Feel free to contact me through my profile here if you'd like to keep in touch. I'm tracking the AF careers of a few young folks that I've met through Y! A and I'd be happy to advise you along the way if you're interested.
