Mommy to 8 month old Jacob | Does she really need my SS#? |
So I am trying to get this babysitting/nanny job part time. The lady said she needs my SS# to claim my payment on her tax return. Can't she do that without it? I was a nanny last year and got paid in check and cash...I don't remember them needing my SS# for that...(they claimed what I made by check only) Additional Details my employer last year owned his own business so I would think he would know what he was doing... |

YES, they need it and you are obligated to provide it to them. This is putting you on notice that you need to report your income. You needed to last year also. It is required for the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit.
If you perform your babysitting in her home, then you should be getting SS and medicare paid for you also, the nanny tax. Not necessary if you work in your home or daycare. |

She is correct. You employer last year was wrong. |

Your former employer knew what he was doing. He was evading payroll taxes by paying you in cash.
Your new employer wants to claim childcare expenses on her tax return. In order to do this, she requires your tax ID number. Also, if you work in her home, you are a household employee and she is required to remit Social Security and Medicare taxes for you. So you will need to provide the SSN to her in order for her to employ you. |

The IRS ties her ability to deduct the expense to your obligation to report the income.
You are reporting all of the income, right?

Yes she needs your ss#, and you can be fined if you refuse to give it to her. Sounds like last year you were paid illegally- and if you didn't report your nanny income and pay tax on it, you illegally evaded taxes. |

Your employer needs your SSN for wage reporting purposes and for claiming child care credit. As a nanny you will be a household employee and your employer is required to withhold Social Security and Medicare taxes from your wages. |

She needs to pay ss taxes and you want it credited to your account. |

You should give her your ss#. She is trying to give you a 1099 form. Depending on how much you were paid by that other person, he could have been in violation of the law. |
