Does the governement accept payment plans if you owe on your taxes?
I owe quite a bit back to the Federal and state government. I was wondering if the IRS at either the Federal or state level accepted payment plans. I live in Kentucky.

The IRS only deals with federal tax issues. You will have to contact the Kentucky Comptroller of Public Accounts for advice on what they can do for you.

The short answer is "yes." Call your local IRS office, explain the situation and they will work with you. They would rather have you paying something instead of paying nothing. State taxing jurisdictions have a similar philosophy.

I know the IRS does with interest. Not sure on the State end.

Sahara
Yes but you will be charged interest.

Isn't it interesting? If they owe you money then they don't pay you interest. But if you owe them money then they expect to be paid interest.

I have know people that paid back taxes in installment payments. Just ask Willie Nelson!!!!!

Yes -- talk to your state IRS.

Most of the time they will be more than happy to accept payments, though you will need to fill out a LOT of forms and you need to get the ball rolling now.

Yes, you can. You should also know that if you are in financial hardship, you may also be able to negotiate an "Offer in Compromise (OIC)" or "Offer in Settlement" to reduce the amount you owe. See the links below for details.

yes i'm pretty sure they do, and if they don't, then they have some serious problems, because not everyone has the money to pay off the whole thing.

Kelly K
Yes they will work with you, just talk to them about it.

Yes, the Federal government will accept payment plans; what they are looking for is to get taxpayers to pay their taxes, however they can. If you contact the IRS directly, you can talk to them about setting up a payment plan. I cannot speak to the state of Kentucky, but most states will accept payment plans as well. Check with a your local tax office or consult a tax professional to help you get repayment plans in place.

yes they do and you can also look into a private broker who can help set it up if yo udont feel comfortable doing it yourself

Can't speak for Kentucky, but IRS will give you an installment agreement without any fuss if you owe less than $25,000 and can pay in full within five years.

Gregg
Really it depends on the state and how much you would owe. If you owe over $10K you can normally settle out on a lesser amount if handled correctly. You will have to pay interest. You can also file an extension. I would advise consulting with a financial advisor though, most people have deductions that they overlook. It's pretty hard for typical employees to owe taxes if you have an accurate w-4 filed with your employer. It's easy to owe taxes if your self employed, work with tips and other special circumstances. Definitely file an extension if you absolutely can't pay those taxes on time. Then modify your with holdings or consider other options for '08 so this doesn't happen again next year.
