No, they were earning money from the United States Postal Service, but to be honest. I can't remember, if this is part of the gov't anymore or not. They did something big in its history, that maybe seperated the USPS into its own entity.
Not for sure, all I know is that it was part of the US Gov't and possibly still is.
However, if you count gov't treasuries, as making money. You can say, that this is one. Basically, lending the gov't money for a return.
Also, I am sure that they are more operations like the USPS that the U.S. gov't runs, but I just can't think of any right now.
Oh yeah, I just thought of one more. I think the SEC (sec.gov), When they fine companies for wrong doing and etc. I think this goes towards keeping the SEC running and to the gov't for their funds.
------
but here is a message to all of the stupid responses about how the gov't just takes money from hard workers.......
If you didn't pay taxes, you wouldn't have any police, fireman, teachers, schools, bridges, roads, protection against invaders for war, and anything else you take for granted in the United States. |

In general yes. Income tax, sales tax, real estate tax, property tax, vehicle tax, sin tax (alcohol, tobacco), luxury tax, inheritance tax (death), import tariffs (outsiders pay a tax to get their stuff in), social security (it's a tax, make no mistake), capital gains tax, and a variety of fees and penalties. Business licenses, filing fees, driver's licenses, medical licenses, hunting and fishing licenses, and environmental impact fees are a few examples. There's also some interest paid, government loans and late tax payments.
Beyond that government does make a small amount of services and goods, very small. For example there are some documents and forms that you must pay for to receive. Most government publications are "free", and paid for with taxes. Impounding and seizing private property generates a few dollars. Lawsuits provide some, the government sues a company for some illegal action, the fine is payable to the government. Things like a city's "administrative towing fee", parking tickets, and stuff like that are small sources of revenue. The postal system represents a notable portion of the government's income. Although tax money is sometimes applied to the postal system to keep it running.
By the time you're done, about 50% of the average US American's income goes into taxes.
All of the things government provides could be privately funded, or paid for through taxes at the local level only, and would be more cost effective and efficient.
By the way, the transition to digital television coming up, assuming you've heard about it, is a very large source of income. When the analog broadcasts end the FCC plans to auction off the left over frequencies. Some are already sold. They stand to collect several tens of billions of dollars. |

that means there's a textbook answer that you need to get from your book...
but the short answer is no. They collect fees for everything from making passports to using parks. I'm sure the judiciary collects money from court fees. There are import duties, which are sort of a tax. |

Most, if not all of the gov't's budget is derived from tax revenue, such as income tax, sales tax, or property taxes. But there are other taxes as well. Fees for licenses and permits, etc. are other ways to make tax revenue. I do believe, however, that the gov't owns patents on certain inventions, but I don't think that goes back into the budget. |
