Does the tax man come after Employed people the way he comes after Self-Employed people?
I have been self-employed and now am on the verge of becoming employed. I have heard that even though one can subtract more expenses related to one's work when he is self-employed, it is more stressful because the tax man is more likely to do an audit. So what are the benefits of changing from self-employed to employed. Since my tax and NIC will be paid directly at source, will the tax man not bother me?

The tax man won`t bother you as he is assured of his money every week or month.
They only audit you if the figures you submit as self employed look iffy.

PAYE takes care of that one and you can not negotiate as you can when you are self employed

the tax man will try and squeeze every possible penny out of ya..wether ur employed or self employed.....

There is more money to be made going after a business. Even if you do everything right they will try and scare you into paying up. They tell you they will audit 7 more years prior to the one they are auditing that moment. They do get a % of the money they collect. They are the governments mafia.

Its got to save a lot of headaches being employed.Just think no more tax returns to fill in and file.Having done both ok you can earn more self employed but then you may have a few more sleepless nights.I am also looking to change to employed in the near future and thats after being self employed for twenty years.also take into consideration if you have no work its a right pain trying to claim JSA i know from experience

If you have been honest. and your job you take up is your only job you have nothing to worry about. But if you work for someone, and then work for yourself as well, then you will have to pay two lots of taxes.

Its true that HMRC are more likely to find mistakes in the tax returns of people who have to maintain their own records. Under PAYE of course tax is deducted at source, so there is little room for error. However, employed people can also have other income not taxed at source such as rental income, a small self employed job, capital gains, etc and so are as open to investigation as anyone.
And a small proportion of investigations taken up annually are purely random, so anyone can get chosen.
