Does the tax revenue generated by smoking exceed the cost of treating smoking-related diseases?
If people can produce verifiable statisitics to support their findings that would be good.
Additional Details
Thanks to all respondents.
Mike: I should have specified that I was talking about the UK. Sorry to have wasted your time.
John's answer has some interesting but utterly irrelevent information.
Harriet: interesting point. I hear a lot of smokers claiming that they are justified in continuing to smoke because their increased tax burden exceeds the cost of treatment. Given, as you rightly say, the complex mechanisms for pooling tax and the difficulty of determining 'smoking-related diseases' are they therefore correct in making this assumption? Or, is this an example of addicts misleading themselves and others?

I think the below figures speak for themselves. The more people give up the habit the higher the average persons tax bill is going to be.

I gave up 6th January 2008 - haven't had a puff since. I smoked 40-50 / day - now thats alot of tax money / year!! Approx £9 / day in tax, times by 365 days = £3285 / year I paid in extra tax. 13 million smokers in the UK say smoking 20 cigarettes / day = thats alot of tax!!!

I hope this helps in answering your question.

If you were shut up in a garage for a few hours with a bunch of people smoking, you wouldn't die.

Now take the same garage, and have one car running... you probably wouldn't last very long.

Everyday we all subjected to car/traffic fumes - which are far worse for you. You have no choice but to inhale these poisonous and deadly fumes.

No one ever mentions this, instead they blame tobacco smoke. Why?

In Britain alone 3,172 people died in road accidents in 2006

1.2 million wordwide.

All above figures EXCLUDE injuries or pullution related deaths.

That's one hell of a disease!
The seventh biggest killer in the world, ahead of diabetes and malaria. The WHO predicted that by 2020 road deaths would become the number three killer, behind heart disease and suicide, although Aids is now a much bigger threat than when that forecast was made.

Yet international funding for Aids, malaria and TB was $4.7bn over the last seven years, compared with about $100m for road safety.

Tax gathering doesn't work like that. Taxes go into a general pool. It is known how much revenue is generated for the Government by the sale of tobacco related products but your difficulty is to prove that any disease is smoking related.
Things are not black and white.

i would say a big yes

I don't think this can really be answered, because smoking-related diseases also affect non-smokers, and the cause of those diseases in any one case cannot be definitely ascribed solely to smoking.

Probably more since most of those that suffer from smoking diseases have insurance. A small % gets covered by the government. Also that money inlcuding the money many states got from the ciggaret companies in lawsuits is put into a general fund and used for other stuff as well even though it wasnt supposed to. Gotta love politicians haha.
